    London Night Tube is Here

Out of interest what sort of interval is there going to be between services on average and will it be consistent throughout the night? I'm still on the fence on this one though, yes it will be useful for some many but there is already a good night bus network. I hope maintenance will not...

Future HST usage as the Royal Train?

The Royal Train.........forget the 442, this sounds like a great use for the planned quadrupole-mode (25kv/3rd rail/diesel/Bentley v12) d-stock conversion that I read about on here a few months ago.....

Jeremy Corbyn & Tom Watson elected leader and deputy leader of the Labour Party

It makes a good story for the press but is Jeremy Corbyn really as unelectable as they say - only time will tell. I'm anticipating lots of polls over the next few weeks and it will be interesting to see the results as I suspect many (not all) of his polices will strike chords with people and...

    Fuel: Supermarket -vs- Branded

A relation of mine used to drive a priviate ambulance and often did long distances, they always used branded fuel there as he said they found they got better mpg. I am presuming it used desiel.

    Windows 8 Help Request

I find this negativity towards Windows 8 on the internet interesting. We are moving most of our Mac users to PCs and have already move all the win 7 users to 8.1 and the feedback has been mostly positive. People like the start menu when the realise they can customise it easily. The main...

    Mobile connectivity at stations

I'm surprised Vodafone did so well, in my experience of commuting in SWT land they are awful. Sure you may have 3G "coverage" but capacity is so poor there might as well not be 3G! I've recently changed to O2 and they are so much better and I'm using the same handset. The issue is how...

    CrossCountry/SWT to withdraw quiet carriage?

I think that sums up many of the quiet carriages I've sat in very nicely!

Creation of class 230 DEMUs from ex-LU D78s by Vivarail

Pie in the sky? Are you suggesting d stock could also be converted into aircraft to help our aviation industry? As I said earlier, they are definitely looking like the most flexible class ever built!

Creation of class 230 DEMUs from ex-LU D78s by Vivarail

Good idea but I think we could take this a bit further. How about one of the coaches made into a proper observation carriage? Keep the front door for entry/exit, replace the second with glass as you say, then cut the roof off the second half for some decent catenary, signalling gantry and tunnel...

Creation of class 230 DEMUs from ex-LU D78s by Vivarail

Wow, D-Stock being converted into Diesel trains? I think I've heard it all now. I take it the dream plan was to use a Class 55 for motive power and a DVT on the other end, oh and to fit IC70 seats along with putting a Mark 3 dining car in the middle? Or are they going the full distance...

    Class 442 the future.

Probably because 319s can be used on lots of different routes, where as the 442s are only suited to long non-stop routes which there are few in 3rd rail land. And I would argue on the routes 442s are suited for, class 444s are a better unit overall anyway.

My suggestion to remove third rail as a priority

UK rail is outdated and dangerous. Many TOCs on here usually refer to performance figures in a smug way when hearing about customer complaints about performance. Packers are also criss-crossing the tracks and damaging things. Everything ought to be removed and replaced by a SNCF TGV network...

    Questions about driving trains.

Something I've always wondered - are the seats you sit in to drive most DMU/EMUs really as uncomfortable as they look! I'm surprised you don't have highly adjustable seats (more in keeping with what pilots get in many planes) from a safety point of view. The only ones that look like they...

    Announcement correctness

"We are now approaching the final destination for this service" always made me smile - isn't destination by default the final one, so why add the word final too? Anywhere else on the service is just a stop surely? In fact I've noticed SWT have stopped saying final destination, maybe someone...

    LBC Europe Debate

It is times like this that I think to myself that we as a Country would be in a far better position if Politicians from all parties had ploughed as much energy into helping British businesses set up or export to the European market and trying to be a leader in Europe as they have spent debating...

    SWT Class 455 refurb

True they are normally not fast but there are two non-stop Waterloo to Surbiton services each evening. One that carries on to Guildford via Cobham and the other terminates at Surbiton. Occasionally you will get one which isn't being delayed by something in front and they certainly go fast. If...

    SWT Class 455 refurb

You can also tell they are old when you're on a fast non-stop between Waterloo and Surbiton. The ride quality at speed is appalling compared to 444/450s or just about any other post year 2000 EMU on the UK network.

    Free and/or open source software

Absolutely - schools should be teaching open source and a bit of programming too I'd say. From what I've seen kids are very quick to pick it all up if it is taught in a fun and interactive way from a young age. They may never use it again but it will give them more confidence in day to day...

    Free and/or open source software

Looking from the corporate desktop computer point of view, from experience the "free alternatives" to Windows or Office aren't really as free as many people believe if you look at things from a company's point of view. It is a bit of a generalisation but people who are keen on free/opensource...

What if Brunel had won the gauge war?

Although the track gauge was wider, the overhang on Brunel's broad gauge was much less, so the over all carriage width was in reality similar to the widest/longest on the network today (e.g something like a Class 159 at 2.82m x 23.21m). From memory of reading about them, I think I recall the...
