    Near miss at Euxton Junction

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/near-miss-at-euxton-junction Luckily no injuries, but this must have been a really frightening experience. James

    25KV over Woodhead.

Yet another Woodhead conjecture thread, so apologies in advance. If in the 1970's Woodhead had been converted to 25KV OHLE would it have lasted longer? And how much is involved changing from the original 1500V DC to 25KV AC? James

    Weaver Junction accident c. 1975

It always struck me as pretty strange that depot open days would have a selection of accident damaged locos on display - some of which had been involved in fatal accidents. James

"Foreign" visitors to loco works - was there any rhyme or reason?

I seem to remember that some loco works used to work on units or locos that were well away from their normal allocated areas. For example, Southern EMUs went to Horwich for painting- necessitating a long distance journey for a job that could potentially be done locally. Was there any reason for...

    Post Coronation travel from EUS

My partner and I are hoping to visit London on the coronation weekend Friday 5th to Sunday 7th May. Outbound seems fine, but the return is all greyed out until Wednesday 10th May. The journey is EBA (Euxton Balshaw Lane) to EUS. Any ideas? James

Trivia- most circuitous route between closest stations.

The two Wigan stations are visible from each other and are only a few tens of metres apart. There's no direct service so how would I get from station to station just using the train. SD.

Trivia- most circuitous route between closest stations.

Let's exclude the London terminii.Wigan Wallgate to Wigan North Western via normal timetabled services? Any others that immediately jump out? James

Trivia: Any lines that were built but never used?

At times it can take ages from planning to completion of a route or branch off. Are there any cases where a line was planned for a particular flow, was built and before completion the reason for the flow was withdrawn? Otherwise what was the shortest a line was in use? James

    Google Maps style rail maps.

I've been using the excellent Rail Miles app as well as RealTime Trains. I wonder if there is anyway to hybridise these and incorporate a highlighted rail route onto a map? Google maps will highlight the current route so it can be seen in the context of the local area. I think it would be...

Many thanks - I'd completely missed that! James

Euxton Balshaw Lane (EBA) and Balshaw Lane

I note on Real Time Trains that there is the station Euxton Balshaw Lane (EBA) which is goes over the WCML at 90 degrees. About a mile south there is another Balshaw Lane as a location - situated about 1 mile (and approx 5 chains) in the direction of Wigan...

Steam loco on M61 southbound - ID please.

Anyone have any clue about the steam loco on a low loader on the M61 Southbound between junctions 9 and 8 this afternoon. Looked to be either in primer or bare (rusty) metal. Think it was a tank loco of some type. I was in heavy traffic so difficult to get any other details. James

Why a delay lifting a remaining line

On a similar note (Mods please feel free to split this if you think it's worth a separate topic), were any closed lines used on an ad hoc basis following closure if there was a blockage on another line. For example, was Woodhead used as a diversion post 1981 if the Hope Valley was shut? What...

    Cheapest return fare.

Ten pence dearer for a return journey as opposed to the single price. What's the furthest you can get for the least amount of money? Just over 2 and a half miles for a penny. At that rate it's Manchester to London for a quid. James.

Vegetation management issues across the network?

There seemed to be a lot less when locos and units seemed to be constantly leaking fuel oil onto the running line. James

Trivia: Any completely self contained routes?

Are there any routes that although part of the National Rail Network are completely isolated? Isle of Wight would be a candidate, but are there any others? There have been temporary examples when routes have been severed and stock has been trapped. James

British electrification OHL dates (mainly 25kV plus the most significant 1.5KV DC)

Bury to Holcombe Moor? Overhead electric, then third rail then back to steam. Think it was 1.2 kv overhead. James

Least used track in regular use.

What track or route has the least frequent usage that is also regular? So a once in a blue moon RHTT won't count but a timetabled service. James
