Which specific train journey is the most profitable in the UK?

The Edinburgh to Glasgow route is highly profitable, indeed the only ScotRail route to make a profit.

    Part time Hours ScotRail

There are 111 part time job share drivers at ScotRail, the majority of whom have 40 years service. It's a no brainer really, half the hours but considerably more than half the take home pay due to not paying higher rate tax and overtime if you want it.

    TfW ‘Active Travel’ Class 153s

As delivered, the heating was hopeless for West Highland temperatures. However they've fitted foot level ducts and it's now very good. Apparently the pipework at the small end was in too poor a condition to consider modifying hence we only drive at the "big" end. Still god awful things plagued...

    TfW ‘Active Travel’ Class 153s

On our "active travel" 153s at ScotRail ASLEF have insisted we only drive from the big end. The legroom is awful for a 3 and a half hour trip, although thankfully they've massively improved the cab heating. The reliability in general though remains woeful.

Substantial gap in new train deliveries

ScotRail need to be placing orders soon. 15x replacement, 318s,320s and probably 334s too. HSTs are on lease until 2030 but pressure exists to get them replaced.

    Caledonian Sleeper

EE is definitely the best over the route. I'm only without a signal Garelochead to Arrochar and Rannoch to Corrour. It's fine everywhere else. Vodafone is rubbish.

    Scotland's 'polar express'

The cabs have their own heater which is always toasty.

    Scotland's 'polar express'

It must be remembered that these units are 35 years old and similar to the 318s,320s and 153s not to mention the HSTs. Just keeping them going is a big challenge for engineering staff. The ageing fleet is putting huge pressure on depots just to keep things running. Often it's a case of running a...

    Scotland's 'polar express'

There were also complaints from residents of the flats as well. There are similar issues at Mallaig. Not sure from who or where but ScotRail agreed not to run the engines prior to the early morning departure.

    Scotland's 'polar express'

The old Eberspacher system was obsolete and pumped out huge clouds of exhaust, often way more than the engines. So no, can't go back.

    Scotland's 'polar express'

The ScotRail 156s were fitted with a new, cleaner auxiliary heater when they were refurbished a few years ago and the heating has been rubbish ever since. Unfortunately since the Premier Inn opened right next to Oban station there were lots of complaints about engines running at 5am so they no...

Welsh / Scottish railway and Sunday working.

This is an example sent today by ASLEF. Not sure what company it's from.

    Motorway services discussion

As a child the Little Chef was our restaurant of choice. We had one about 20 minutes drive away and if my parents asked where we'd like to go for dinner it was always Little Chef. The magnificent 7 burger was a thing to behold, along with Jubilee pancakes and the all day breakfast. Admittedly...

    Blood Pressure

The cut off here at ScotRail to fail a medical is 180/100 according to the occupational health guy.

    Kirknewton Level Crossing Question.

If a train was travelling at any sort of speed approaching a red the overspeed sensors would catch it long before the signal.

    Kirknewton Level Crossing Question.

Stopping services require the driver to press the plunger to activate the crossing. Otherwise the barriers would be down for a long time whilst the train is at the station. Non stop services will be signalled straight through.

    Caledonian Sleeper

It might be parallel but it's not exactly close. A considerable uphill hike to a new station is probably not welcome after a long shift. And how many people at Faslane have start/finish times that coincide with the 6 trains a day service? Can't see many using it.

ScotRail Christmas and New Year 2023

Aww what a shame. Staff in the Strathclyde area have worked on Boxing day for years, about time others got a shot as well.
