Paying back the cost of Covid-19

A lien from the government then. They would effectively own a slice of your property, which you could pay off at some point, else it would come from your estate. This wouldn't affect your cash at all. Note that I've said several times that this isn't what I expect to happen.

COVID-19 and the lockdown effects on mental health.

But are people so very different? Can you say precisely what is it about 2020 vs 1945 that makes the comparison pathetic - assertions are easy to make, but carry zero weight.

Paying back the cost of Covid-19

I don't. If they really are mortgaged to the hilt their net worth wouldn't trigger the tax.

COVID-19 and the lockdown effects on mental health.

Let's see now... WW2: Lasted 6 years, bombed, food heavily rationed, economy up the spout, may have a job but for most that means supporting the war effort, not seeing younger family members for years and possibly never, perpetual worry about being invaded by Nazis, allowed out, but not a lot...

The reasons for going into lockdown

Do you have evidence to back your first assertion? Or your second? Excess deaths are estimated at c.26k for just 3 weeks; only c.18k were registered as C19 on the death certificates. Currently nobody knows (well, unless you are the exception) what has caused that difference.

Paying back the cost of Covid-19

Possibly, but where there's a will, there's a way. I think that you'd better demonstrate why ALL taxes are counter-productive, because if they were why do we have any taxes at all? And, if printing money has no downsides, why don't they just print, print, print all the time?

COVID-19 and the lockdown effects on mental health.

On this particular day, given some of the opinions about the elderly that have been expressed recently on this forum, I'd like to share this FB page. From an additional comment:

COVID-19 and the lockdown effects on mental health.

Many on here write as if mental wellbeing is only a problem for the young. This is completely false. As MHA say:

Paying back the cost of Covid-19

The people who have trouble won't be working and therefore are unlikely to have a mortgage. In your example it would be easy enough for the government to waive stamp duty for payers of the "wealth tax". These are relatively simple obstacles to overcome.

We must enable the economy to recover as soon as practicable

No, it will not, to any meaningful extent. Lert me take an example: If the R in care homes is 3 (which is the default R with no lockdown) and the R for the rest of the country is 0.1, then the R for the whole country will be just under 0.12. Care homes have very little effect on the overall R...

Paying back the cost of Covid-19

Let's start from the beginning. There are four types of taxes: 1. Taxes on goods 2. Taxes on earnings 3. Taxes on assets (sale or purchase, or IHT) 4. Taxes on businesses (of which employers' NI is one) All have their potential downsides, which would have to be overcome. 1. These are...

We must enable the economy to recover as soon as practicable

Firstly, R is not calculated from deaths, which immediately invalidates your argument. Secondly, 66.5m is 160 times as big as 418k. R in care homes would have to be massive to have a noticeable effect on the overall R. If you don't understand that then frankly you shouldn't be commenting on the...

We must enable the economy to recover as soon as practicable

But it's not the same lockdown as before, so your 'headline' was misleading, as I said. Or B&Q, or a takeaway, or a petrol station, or those sneaky meetings you had with friends/relatives/your hairdresser...

The reasons for going into lockdown

Well, it's pretty clear now that the lower figure was optimistic. I saw figures of 250k and 500k estimated for the upper. We will never know how accurate they were.

We must enable the economy to recover as soon as practicable

This is misleading - they have eased a number of restrictions. I saw something earlier that most were catching it at home, so maybe people should get out more... Care homes is an issue, because I think that the government, pre-Boris getting C19, had decided to throw them under a bus, no matter...

Paying back the cost of Covid-19

Even small yachts are hard to afford for any but the very comfortably off. But yachts was only an example. Define certain things as luxury goods and raise the VAT. As for buying elsewhere, I do feel that there has to be some international cooperation - and everyone in going to be in the same yacht.

You mean here, as on these forums?

The reasons for going into lockdown

I think so too. But what would cause the NHS to be overwhelmed is too many people catching the virus at once, so the two are interlinked (and many of the other suggested reasons are too, like the R rate, which is pretty much the same as the infection rate).

Long term social distancing: Impact on public life & public transport?

Precisely. But this is daft. I think the number of people who are actually enjoying the lockdown is pretty small. It's simply that some are stoic and some are neurotic.
