All line Rover - when the dust settles

Start the ALR mid week and have your nights at home on Friday and Saturday as these are the more expensive nights in hotels. Plan the Sunday carefully due to fewer services. Personally I wouldn't bother with sleepers but that is because I have never managed to sleep on them. The Cardiff to...

    Disabled Railcard fare query

I frequently travel with my mum who has a disabled persons railcard. We both get 1/3 off the standard fare and have never encountered any difficulties with this. My mum is deaf but is good at lip reading and has bone anchored hearing aids so her disability isn't immediately obvious. I did wonder...

    Scottish adventure!

I have to agree that three nights in Thurso is too much even if you hire a car. There is always a slim chance of seeing the Northern Lights in the far north but that wouldn't be enough to persuade me to stop for so long. I visited the far north in April, staying in Mey near John O'Groats and two...

"Jacobite" Fort William to Mallaig - No Heating??

An alternative that I did last year is to use the ScotRail service but time it so that you will see the steam train at Mallaig. Your ScotRail train is likely to be less busy and you can book a window seat. My priority was the views which didn't disappoint. The ScotRail option is a lot cheaper...

    ALR help please

I did the WAG one way from Cardiff and stayed in the Travelodge in Holyhead. Quick to check in with a clean and quiet room. I travelled in late May and was lucky enough to enjoy a glorious sunset all the way to Holyhead but it will be dark a lot earlier in August so you may want to stop off...

    Rubbish Collection Rant

I am no expert but I feel I must make two comments on the back of what others have said and my own personal experience. 1) The teams who collect my bins, that is both male and female staff, work efficiently, are polite and friendly. I think they do a fantastic job. 2) Council tax does pay for...

Buying Rover ticket at different station

I purchased my Explore Wales 4 in 8 days rover ticket at London Paddington three weeks in advance of travel. It did take a little explaining but I got the right ticket. I didn't know the code but knew the price and that seemed to help.

Not being able to sleep on when travelling overnight

I can and frequently do fall asleep on trains, coaches and when a passenger in a car but sleep on planes alludes me which is very frustrating. I think it is due to the lack of leg space as my knees hurt after a while on planes. I find planes noisy and the food smells keep me awake. As for hints...

How far would you walk to work?

For two years I walked 40 mins each way to work which seemed fine but is probably the maximum time I would consider. This journey had no viable public transport option and I didn't have a car at the time. On the plus side I was fitter. Even walking in the rain was OK as I have good waterproofs...

Can you travel from Lands End to John O Groats entirely on bus vehicles (not coach vehicles)?

I enjoyed Mark Mason's book Move Along Please where he completes the same journey. There are also two Brant books called Bus Pass Britain which detail scenic bus journeys. They probably won't help with your trip planning but I found them enjoyable reading. Good luck with the journey.

Opinion: Which is the best stretch of railway in the British Isles?

The Avocet line from Exeter to Exmouth. In three years of commuting on this I barely read on the train as the views, even in the dark, are wonderful.

Maximum total number of passengers on Night Riviera sleeper train

I am part way through watching 'The Ghan' and it got me wondering what is the maximum total number of passengers (in cabins) that can travel on the Night Riviera sleeper service? Any ideas? Thank you.

Scenic routes using a London travel card

Using a London 1-6 zones travel card what are the most scenic or interesting routes that I could travel please? I plan to travel on a Saturday and I feel sure that there must be some scenic routes in the London travel card area. Thank you.
