Conductor / Guard Dispatch in Europe

On the New York Subway, the conductor gives two on the buzzer to the driver, but only at the start of the train's journey - at all other stations the driver just goes when all doors are closed. Anyone know why this is?

Luggage on trains… bikes now take priority?

One thing a lot of people either aren't aware of, or are unwilling to do, is put luggage underneath seats. On the 755s, for example, there's quite a lot of room under them due to the cantilevered seat design.

    Tervueren

A nice idea for a round trip is to take the 44 out to Tervuren, then walk to Ban-Eik to pick up the 39 back into town. I've done it before and the walk was quite pleasant, I think it goes along the trackbed of a former railway. Last time I was in Brussels, both the 39 and 44 were solidly in the...

Are there any male automated announcements on trains?

DB Regio have used a male voice (Ingo Ruff) on board their trains in Germany for many years. I believe they now use a text-to-speech version of it. Now that I think of it, ONE used a male voice on board their trains in the mid-2000s, before being replaced by Julie Berry.

DOO in Europe - how widespread is it and what have the unions' reactions been?

Hamburg Hbf does indeed still have platform dispatchers, Köln Hbf too (presumably due to how crowded it gets). Both the Berlin and Hamburg U-Bahn used to have guards, they rode in the front cab with the driver and gave verbal instructions for when it was safe to close the doors and to depart -...

    Vienna - suggestions?

If you're enjoying the trams in Vienna, be sure to check out the tram museum - nearest station/stop is Schlachthausgasse (U3, 18). Open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. If you do end up getting the chance for a full-day trip, I'd recommend visiting Graz - a lovely city, and a scenic...

Thanks, that's a great help. I've not been to Poland before, so I'll definitely keep an eye out for the Konstal trams too!

    Poland Questions

I'm planning a trip to Poland in March, does anybody know if there's anywhere in the country where it's still quite easy to find EN57 EMUs in unrefurbished (or minimally refurbished) condition? Also, does anybody know if ex-Vienna E1 trams are still operating in Krakow?

Paris - what to do in 2023

In terms of older EMUs, the Z5300s and Z6400s are sadly no more. Still MI79/84s on the RER B and various Z2Ns on the C and D. On line 6 of the metro, MP89s displaced from the 4 are about to start replacing the MP73s, and the MP59s on the 11 haven't got a huge amount of time left either.

Any remaining "D" trains in Germany?

From my understanding of German-language Wikipedia, it's so they can have the greater share of paths for their regular SyltShuttle car-carrying trains now that they face competition from private operator RDC. By uncoupling the DMU in Niebüll and running it further to Bredstedt, a longer (and...

Steering wheels in locomotive cabs ? (Glacier Express)

The last few batches of 110/140/150 used the same thyristor control as the 151s. The 181s were also thyristor controlled, although only the prototype locos were built before the first 151s with series production following a little later. The 141s were a little different, they too featured a...

    Trivia: outdated posters and signage

Unless they've been changed fairly recently, quite a few stations on the Cambridge - Ipswich line (Dullingham, Newmarket, Thurston and Elmswell from memory) still have Anglia Railways signage.
