I had the same problem! Going to Leeds and now Manchester I've had to buy two singles in advance both times with no option for a return, although when I got to the ticket office at York for the Leeds journey, the guy said that although there is no return ticket to Leeds, buying a return ticket...

I live in Haxby, on the line where they are supposed to go, the 2 level crossings *automatic* in our village both broke.. they were frozen down and were so for several hours, even when fixed looking down the tracks as you were crossing there was a lot of hardened slush and snow covering the tracks.
