Is the Heathrow Express a viable, worthwhile service?

To my understanding, paths and platform space are at a premium at Paddington. Heathrow Express is still twice as fast as the Elizabeth line but is also twice the price and only serves Paddington - I imagine the Elizabeth line must have severely cut into Heathrow Express passenger numbers? If...

    Find the Tube Game

Hi all, Mods: please delete or move if you feel this is not appropriate. I've written a game where you have to find all the rail stations on the TfL network (Underground, DLR, Elizabeth Line, Overground and London Trams): findthetube.com. I'd love for people to try it out and let me know what...

Proposals for three new West Midlands railway stations to be developed

https://wmre.org.uk/proposals-for-three-new-west-midlands-railway-stations-to-be-developed/ Quoting from the press release: I don't know much about rail in this area of the country. Is there capacity to stop additional trains at these locations? Coventry East is on the WCML and must be fairly...

    Eurotunnel/HS1 Inspection Train

(Mods: not sure if this should actually be in International Transport? Move if you like.) After reading the thread on the Eurostar dewirement and rescue today, I got to reading about the Eurotunnel Class 0001 that were used for the rescue. Specifically, it seems they are used to haul the SNCF...

Do all UK trains with toilets now have CET tanks?

A fairly simple question, but quite hard to find a definite answer on Google. If there are still non-CET trains out there, someone will eventually have the dubious honour of being the last person to have their waste dumped into the ballast. I feel like they should get a little trophy or...

RAAC Concrete - Any rail infrastructure affected?

Reading the news about RAAC concrete, it seems to me that it was so widely used that it's probably on the rail estate somewhere. Obviously (hopefully) not anything critical to the running of trains - nothing safety critical, but things like stations, depots, signalling centres perhaps? Just...

Is there a better way to monitor infrastructure to preemptively catch failures?

mods note - split from this thread They will take notice, take the opportunity for a photo-op, praise the industry etc. What they won't do is actually pay for a program of pro-active inspection and maintenance to avoid this kind of dangerous situation in the first place (and the expensive...

Does the delay to the Euston HS2 station matter to local people in the area?

mods note - split from here Right, but as much as he may have been against the station in principle, I bet his constituents will want a half-finished hole in the ground even less. A completed station brings jobs, tax income etc., as well as access to everything that HS2 connectivity brings...

When did our mainlines get their current names?

Happy New Year all! As a New Year's gift for all the nerds and pedants, I have a question: when did our mainlines get their names? For example, when was the first time the words "East Coast Mainline" were used to refer to that route?

Weird events on a Northern train earlier this evening

Hi all, I was travelling on the 1857 Hull to Doncaster today (2C39, a two car 158). On the approach to Brough, we stopped for a while. Then we started moving again, but very slowly (and with what to me sounded like wheelslip but I'm not any kind of expert). A few seconds later we passed over a...

How does route knowledge work for stations?

Just out of curiousity: Drivers have to retain route knowledge for diversions, how does it work for stations? Say a route would normally use platforms 3 and 4 at a station, but could be diverted into 1, 2, 5 or 6 if required. Do drivers need to sign all these platforms same as they would for routes?

Could The Ironbridge Line in Telford become a light rail/tram route?

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/the-ironbridge-line-in-telford.237182/ Wouldn't this be better turned into a light trail/tram system rather than heavy rail? It would be a good starting point for a small tram system covering the Telford area in general...

    New Measurement Train Drivers

Hopefully an easy question to answer. Who drives the NMT? Going all over the country, there can't be drivers that have committed all that route knowledge to memory, so there must be local drivers that swap out at various points. Are they NR employees or contractors? How does scheduling work? Do...

    Lengthening Birmingham - Stansted Services

Hi all, I can find some previous discussion around this already, but nothing that in depth. I'm wondering what would be required to increase the length of the cross country Birmingham-Stansted services? In terms of platform extensions, moving signals, etc. How many coaches could you add now...

    E-ticket availablity on XC app

Hi all, I regularly travel to/from Whittlesford Parkway and Cambridge North. I've been using the Cross Country app and happily buying off peak singles and returns, using a combination of direct GA trains and also changing at Cambridge to/from Thameslinks. Regardless of selected journey, I've...

Trivia - Longest journey between platforms (without using the footbridge)

At Whittlesford Parkway (my local station), if you can't use the footbridge (because you have a wheelchair or whatever), to get from P1 to P2 it's a 4.1 mile journey: Is this the longest in the country, or is there somewhere even worse?

    Disruption at Cambridge 19-Oct-2021

Looks like major disruption at Cambridge tonight due to a dewirement. GA Twitter thread: https://twitter.com/greateranglia/status/1450537268511379458?t=9mLpuGQSirKEDMselqcIng&s=19 Thameslink Twitter thread, including two images of the dewirement...

Do trains have fuel gauges in the cab?

Very simple question, just out of curiosity! I can imagine that there's no particular need for drivers to know the fuel state of a train, given that there's not a lot they can do about it. I'm guessing "fuel management" is left to depots and planners.

    Signalling Map of the UK

Hi all, Apologies if this has been asked before. I did search, but couldn't find anything. I'm after a map of the UK showing information on which signalling system (s) is/are in operation on a particular section of railway. I don't mean things like tracksy that go down to the level of...

West Midlands Trains 25% capacity increase on the Northampton to Euston LNR route (reported in March 2019)

With reference to this press release: https://www.londonnorthwesternrailway.co.uk/about-us/news-desk/west-coast-rail-passengers-benefit-more-capacity-and-additional-services-may We often talk about the WCML being "the busiest mixed-traffic railway in Europe" or words to that effect. Given...
