    Toilets on Mid Wales line?

The late afternoon service has a 12 minute layover at Llandrindod on Mon-Sat (providing it's on time) There's a public toilet on the street just outside the station I believe.

    Northern conductor training

I guess people to be based in Manchester do their training in Liverpool... :D

Trivia: Quay side/ Harbour stations/ terminuses

Harwich International, formerly known as Parkeston Quay. There are twice daily sailings to the Hook of Holland (and in the past there were passenger routes to Denmark, Sweden and Germany).

Grant Shapps confuses East West Rail with the Leeds to Manchester TRU

There needs to be a continuous dual carriageway from the M67 at Mottram to the M1 at Tankersley. Legislate to remove the strip of land concerned from the Peak National Park. Bits of the topography are challenging but we could hire some good consultants to advise on this. Under-road heating to...

Which train type will you miss the least when they are all withdrawn?

Yes, 150s should be top of the retirement list: they're excessively noisy with uncomfortable seating and a poor ambience. 156s are better - though most suited to medium length journeys with not too many stops.

    Russia invades Ukraine

Yes, sorry. the cookies were in 2013. I think Nuland's "f**k the EU" came in 2014.

    Russia invades Ukraine

That might be the easiest but that isn't going to happen. You can't expect that a deal which was available just before hostilities began will still be available after the expenditure of much blood and treasure. Russia in fact has a positive incentive not to make a deal because Ukraine is likely...

    Russia invades Ukraine

I'm doing a thought experiment: I'm imagining that NATO has been disbanded but that the Warsaw Pact continues to exist and is expanding: how relaxed would London be if the Republic of Ireland became a Warsaw Pact member?

    Russia invades Ukraine

No. The Soviet Union broke up in a largely peaceful way and Russia has previously been very tolerant of the expansion of NATO, eg in the Baltic states. A new power is arising: BRICS+, and in the fullness of time that will lead to the decline of the American Empire.

    Russia invades Ukraine

I'm glad that there are still some old school people around like George Galloway and Mick Lynch and that the modern left hasn't been entirely co-opted by the neoliberal and neocon establishment. This Ukraine conflict actually started back in 2014 - though you'd never guess that from listening...

Northern re-records 34 station name announcements with local pronunciation

The phrase 'this is the Northern service to' is irritating. Use of the definite article suggests that it is the only one, or the only one that day; 'a Northern service' would be better.

Northern re-records 34 station name announcements with local pronunciation

The Yorkshire chap does a robust rendition of 'Cark & Cartmel' - though I think a Scouser might do it even better. The exaggerated f'th in Carnforth in the old recording came across as a bit of an affectation. There are times when a more RP version, in this case as in the number or the Scottish...

    Northern Ireland oddities(?)

In England Kiveton Park on the Sheffield-Worksop line has a road junction immediately beyond the crossing on the north side - with room for only one vehicle without fouling the track. There is a signal box immediately adjacent which can keep an eye on things, however.

    "Train journey from Hell"

Should you have the misfortune of being turfed off a train near Astley crossing I'd recommend taking a brisk half hour's walk north to the Old Boat House, a pleasant pub located where the lane crosses over the Bridgewater Canal. Once suitably fed and watered you could continue through Astley...

Trivia: Settlements without a station where the two nearest stations are on different lines

Not really - New Mills Central is close to the main settlement and the southern suburb of Newtown has its own station. But there's no station on the third line, the direct route to Hazel Grove.

Buffet trolleys - time they started taking cash again.

Someone tweeted the other day that they went into a 'No cash, card only' cocktail bar in Leeds. They ordered 2 cocktails (£18), 2 madri (£12) and 2 tequilas (£9), offered cash, then walked out. Anyway, sounds as if most on here will lap up the idea of programmable digital money: you know...
