    Cable theft gang jailed

w0033944; It is possible but I won't go into how, I was once called to an incident on the 'Crack' Sidings at Edge Hill where that is exactly what they did. Worse, they left the OHLE in such a condition that it was left swinging whilst live about 6 feet from the ground and part of it was touching...

    Suicide on the Railways

Whilst working a night turn in the early 2000’s I had a call from Control at about 02:00 one morning advising me of a threatened suicide on the Bootle Branch. Apparently someone was standing on a bridge wall threatening to jump, and somebody was trying to talk them out of it, and that Merseyside...

    Suicide on the Railways

Having been involved (as part of my old job) in over 40 fatalities on third rail, OHLE and people struck by trains (mainly suicides) I have to say that personally, with only one exception, I did not have any sympathy for them because of the suffering they cause to the poor sod driving the train...

Railway company fined over tresspasser death

Like it or not, you will never stop determined kids getting into places where they shouldn’t be. I was involved in many fatalities and there was always some nut case casting round looking for things to blame the railways for. In one electrocution on the OLE a Coroner criticised the railways for...

Railsigns - agreed, it is a complete contradiction in terms. G

    Permanent Speed Restrictions

Hello Joseph Locke, As I said in my original post, unless things have changed radically in the last few years a PSR is a Permanent Speed Restriction. To the very best of my knowledge there is no such thing as a Permissible Speed Restriction though I am happy to be corrected if anybody has fact...

    Permanent Speed Restrictions

At last, something correct appears - thanks Railsigns, very well put. G

    Permanent Speed Restrictions

Unless things have changed radically in the last few years PSR’s are published in the Sectional Appendix and when Drivers sign for the route they are conversant with that portion of line and the restrictions on it for example restrictions on curves, on Slow Lines, through junctions, or...

    What does this sign mean?

It is for an emergency speed restriction (a restriction imposed at very short notice), not an advertised temporary speed restriction.

Rail Accidents needed for Discovery Documentary

Or You may want to think about the Lime Street Crash in the early 90's - photo attached.

Rail Accidents needed for Discovery Documentary

Try the Weaver Junction collision in 1976 – most of the Operations Dept Managers at Garston got shafted over that as well as the shunting staff at Runcorn and (I think) the Guard. The train was running as a Class ‘6’ but because of the completely inadequate brake force available, it should have...

    Fishplates

It means fishplates on the same rail eg - both sides (plates) of a cess rail or 6ft rail, but not to plates broken on both of those rails at once i.e 6ft and cess rails at the same time. Personally I would never have allowed a train to pass over broken plates on both rails unless a competent...

Reason for wavy line on track

There is a very good reason why zig-zags are used rather than straight lines. Unfortunately I don’t remember what it is as some kind soul nicked my Signalling Principles. As I recall though, the Welder who made them (in stainless steel) was provided with a ‘stamp’ to press into the weld to...

Reason for wavy line on track

It is for track circuiting – where there is a risk of the T/C failing to show occupied when a train is present. Usually found on the approach to a buffer stop or other places where there is a risk of a ‘wrong side’ failure. But ........ it’s bloody expensive, my old boss used to say that the S&T...

Drivers using mobiles while waiting for their train.

Agreed, though there will allways be some nut-cases with nothing better to do, that will find any reason, no matter how petty to complain about something. Foxtrot them. Good response Dr.iver.

    Steam Tours under the Wires

33056 - I was refering to OLE restrictions but you are quite correct regarding crossover roads between platforms ..... I forgot about that one !!. St Helens Central and Newton-Le-Willows come to mind. G

    Steam Tours under the Wires

The STN’s always used to specify that the loco should not, when possible, be at a stand (usually in a platform or sidings) for a long time with the funnel directly under an insulator where OLE was present. Speaking to some of the older Signalmen and Drivers who remember them running regularly...

Big cat seen from stationary train ECML Newark

On two occasions I've seen a large cat in the Edge Hill area in 2008. It was the size of a Greyhound but was definetely a cat from the way it moved. No way was it a dog. I did report it, however I can hardly blame the Keystones or RSPCA for not acting on it or indeed believing it so the second...

Why do we seem to see so many suicides on the railways at the moment?

LCC106, I wouldn't berate you - for what it's worth I think you give a good example. If a bird strike feels and sounds like it does, you can imagine what an impact with a human feels and sounds like. In your position, you are probably better placed that anyone else to make such an observation...
