    Grand Central stranding passengers (28/03)?

https://www.sunderlandecho.com/news/councillor-slams-grand-central-after-sunderland-rail-passengers-left-stranded-4578465 Grand Central have been slammed by a local councillor and their response is weak as hell! Is anyone else feeling like GC will see things through to 2026 and then just shut...

    New Sunderland Station Building

Toilets still closed at Sunderland, they've basically been closed since it opened. Really not good enough and the place still looks like an empty warehouse.

    New Sunderland Station Building

It really is a bit of a let down. Much better than what it replaced, there's no doubt about that but it is bare and quite frankly depressing. I also think it will age terribly and look as bad as the old one did in about 10 or 20 years. Any news on plans to reopen the old platforms?

    New Sunderland Station Building

The new Sunderland Station south building opened yesterday and the feedback has been pretty negative from local people. What do you think? I do think that it's a bit of a let down, particularly compared to the artist impressions. No doubt it's an improvement on what it replaced but at the...

    Sunderland Station - Disused Platform

Great to see that its in relatively good shape. They have talked about turning the station back into a "4 track" station but with the widening of the middle I'm not sure how possible that will be. Possibly a 3 track station using this redundant platform and I did see something about the...

    Sunderland Station Improvements

I'm liking the look of the refurbishment. The article talks about creating a '4 track, 4 platform station'. Having spoken to the Council this is very much an asipiration rather than a concrete plan and would probably only happen if the Leamside Line reopened I'm told. The article seems to...

Great British Railways: Thoughts, predictions, speculation

I think that this plan is very short sighted and being put in place to please the public for short term gains rather than any real logistical advantages. The public have been increasingly vocal about "re-nationalising" the railways. The usual arguments include that they want to cut ticket...

    Sunderland Station Improvements

I saw an article this morning suggesting that Sunderland Station is going to be improved. This includes a full remodelling of the South end and a new car park being added. These two things are very much needed. More interestingly though they have mentioned turning it back into a 4 platform...

Sunderland Port - New Rail Business?

A 950 Network Rail Train was doing track inspection works here at the end of July and there are rumours that Nissan are going to use the port for cars export. Anyone heard anything?

Carmont (near Stonehaven) derailment - 12 August 2020

From the looks of those photos the MK3 coaches appear to have remained mostly intact and not crumpled or split. That's a very very very small positive. Absolutely terrible situation though, truly awful.

Sunderland Port - New Rail Business?

This Tweet by the Port Of Sunderland Twitter page caught my eye yesterday. https://twitter.com/PortSunderland/status/1147058097841758208 It sounds like some new business might be on the way for the rail link to the port? It's been dormant since the scrap metal trains were withdrawn. Has...

Grand Central running extra services for the Cup Final

It has been announced that Grand Central are running extra Sunderland trains non-stop from Sunderland to KX for the cup final next week. Apparently they will be hired from another operator. Any idea what they will be and where they are coming from?

    Sunderland Station Refurbishment - 2001

I recently stumbled on a bit of footage of the Sunderland Station refurb which took place in 2001. In my opinion they completely wrecked the station when they put the roof on, it's a drab awful place after the refurb. I forgot quite how pleasant it was before hand. I know we have a few fellow...

Increased Northern Services between Newcastle and Middlesborough.

When Arriva secured the Northern franchise part of their plans included half hourly services down the Durham Coast Line between Newcastle and Middlesborough. These were due to begin in December 2018. As far as I'm aware these are yet to begin and it's all gone a bit quiet. Do we have any news...

    Grand Central cancellations

It’s been a complete shambles for GC recently. Surely they knew the history of the 180s and their constant reliability issues? They have turned a TOC which was one of the best into a total laughing stock.

    Sunderland Hidden Platform

Funnily enough I’ve stumbled upon a photo of the old hidden platform. Looks very serviceable, still can’t understand why they didn’t put the Metro onto it.

    Sunderland Hidden Platform

The Luftwaffe may have started the demolition but 'forward thinking' 60s planners more than finished the job. The building is an absolute disgrace and the 2002 refurbishment just made things even worse. I really don't know what they were thinking. I don't think the current station can ever...

    Sunderland Hidden Platform

It's about time, the place is a disgrace. Even with improvements the station is still one of the worst on the network. It would be better to rip it down and start again.

Derailed Freight Train - Sunderland, Durham Coast Line

https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/freight-train-derailed-live-major-14165396 Looks like we've seen massive disruption today, including GC and Northern services. They have been diverting via Darlington.

    South Dock (Sunderland) Branch

Totally agree, the re-signalling has helped but in theory we should be using the Durham Coast line a hell of a lot more. The Metro north of Sunderland taking up so many paths really doesn't make things easy for trains that want to use it as an ECML diversion.
