Alstom and Hitachi now announced as winners of HS2 rolling stock supplier contract

Does that stand for just this first batch or for the lot of them? I thought the split between classic and HS2 only trains would be about 50/50, although now the eastern leg is axed I guess there's not as much need for HS2 only stock

Comparing SWT/SWR's past, present, and future timetables.

If I'm not mistaken, the current basis of the current non-COVID timetable is based mostly off of SWT's 2004 changes. However I'm curious to see what changes were made to it and just how many changes there were. I'm finding it difficult to find any sort of pre-2004 timetable online or even a list...

Trivia: Longest journey time between two consecutive stations

Provided they return to the pre-COVID timetable eventually, there won't be a direct Calais>Ashford train so a turnback at Ebbsfleet is still required! That's a pretty incredible suggestion.

One thing about commuting to Vauxhall is that season tickets, and I presume tickets in general, cost 30-40% less than going the extra mile in Waterloo.

Advice on current conditions on Eurostar

So just to make sure I'm on the right page, double vaccinated travellers will have to do a PCR test and self-isolate when returning to the UK, regardless of where you've arrived from?

Best passenger high speed train in UK?

I quite like this list. Only things I'd change would put the 373 in second, put the voyager just below the Meridian and drop the Pendo to joint last with the HST.

Best passenger high speed train in UK?

Alternatively, our railways have been deprived to the point where we've had to push old lines to their maximum capacities and speeds while still not being able to match the speeds, trains lengths, or reliability of our European neighbours. Yes it is impressive what we've managed to do with a...

Best passenger high speed train in UK?

I was waiting on someone to say this o_O. It's the same conclusion I drew up in the other older thread (post #8).

    Eurostar Schedules for Autumn

As happy as I am that a new timetable has arrived, I'm not overly impressed by the 19:13 being the last train back from Paris. I wasn't expecting the 21:13 to be reinstated but having the 20:13 would've been nice.

    Comparing new trains - 195 vs 755

Hard disagree there. Although I agree the 156s are a cut above the other 2, every time I get on a 195 now, despite their flaws, I'm thinking about how glad I am that I'm not on anything from the Sprinter family, maybe barring the 158.

    Hydrogen trains for Whitby ?!

If Whitby is to become self contained, then could a simpler, more frequent timetable be implemented? I think Battersby is just shy of an hour from Whitby, and if the turn around space for 2 600s next to each other is under the limit, could it be used as a reversing/passing place?

Coaches/Portions locked out of use and then unlocked at later stations

I mean that when the carriage was unlocked at a busier station, eg Reading, then passengers boarding wouldn't have to cope with other passengers getting off the train first.

    SWR December 2022 Timetable Consultation

I can't say I've got used to it, regardless of whether I'm taking a train at 9 in the morning or at midnight, I have 20 and 50 engrained into my head for Readings. For people who don't travel at a consistent time of day then a standard hourly timetable is useful. It doesn't help when anomalies...

Coaches/Portions locked out of use and then unlocked at later stations

About 2 years ago, I travelled between Southampton and Reading on a 220+221 formation. The front 220 was locked so everyone travelled in the 221, then at Reading, the 220 was unlocked and all 9 cars were available to passengers. I wondered if it was anything to do with trying to keep a portion...
