What level of antisocial behaviour exists on your tram network?

Ok so it's not strictly a tram but the TW Metro have had to hire several teams of roving security guards to police the metro the anti-social behaviour has become such a problem.

    Bus Industry in Peril

Two weeks ago I was caring for my mum who’s in a wheelchair for a few days. It’s painful for her to get in and out of my car so we were using the bus so she could be comfortable in the chair throughout the day. I haven’t used the bus for donkeys years but I was shocked by a few things: Fares...

Trivia: Shortest-lived name a station has had

Depends on your definition. It’s short lived compared to the 200,000 years humans have been on Earth :lol::lol:

Trivia: Shortest-lived name a station has had

Meadow Well station on the Tyne and Wear Metro network - was called Smith’s Park from 1982 before changing to Meadow Well in 1994. Brockley Whins station has been renamed twice. Opened as Brockley Whins in 1840, renamed Boldon Colliery in 1925, renamed back to Brockley Whins in 1991.

Reduce bus stops to attract more passengers?

Would buses become more attractive to passengers, particularly car drivers, if the infrastructure was more tram-like? I'm thinking of a situation where the bus follows a main A-road directly into a town or city centre. Would it be better if existing stops were removed and new 'enhanced' stops...

Should certain light rail lines be converted back to heavy rail?

The North East Rail and Metro Strategy is proposing to link the ECML to Newcastle Airport by converting the Tyne and Wear Metro between Regent Centre - Airport (and the Depot Avoiding Line) to heavy rail standard so metro and heavy rail will share the same tracks here.

Apology issued after woman trapped in doors of London Overground train and dragged along platform

I feel sorry for the driver. He or she could lose their job because of the actions of this idiotic passenger who thinks it's ok to stick a body part in closing train doors endangering her own safety and delaying everyone on the train. Selfish and reckless in my opinion.

    Have Northern Upped Their Game?

As a commuter in the North East I still don’t feel there’s many good things to say about Northern. We’re still having to make do with the cast offs from the rest of the rail network. 32 year old 156s, poor journey times compared to the car, last minute cancellations, expensive tickets...

Ding ding ding - Manufacturing of the new Metro trains is now underway. And Nexus has formally confirmed it will receive 46 new Metro trains rather than the initial order of 42. https://www.nexus.org.uk/news/item/nexus-orders-four-more-new-metro-trains-manufacturing-gets-underway

Tyne and Wear Metro Fleet Requirements

Trains are kept at Gosforth depot and the new depot at Howdon can take 10 trains. Each train has a number 101 - 112 for green line trains and 121 - 136 for yellow line trains so 27 trains are used for the normal service out of the 45 trains in total. Then there's the 8 extra Pelaw / Monkseaton...

Light rail or tram proposals that never happened!

Around 2005 / 6 the Tees Valley Metro was supposed to use Tram-Trains, it got downgraded to diesel trains, then got canned entirely.

Early days of the Tyne & Wear Metro

The original ‘80s plan was for the tunnel at St. James to emerge on-street and run as a tram through the West End. A tunnelled extension was ruled out from the get-go - cost prohibitive due to the geology in the west of the city. The Metrocars were designed for street running, only requiring...

Trivia - abandoned railways with intact track

The Leamside Line in County Durham closed in 1991 and retained all the track, signals and other lineside equipment until Network Rail lifted it in 2013. Interestingly, an ex rail engineer came along and stole 2 miles of track in the Penshaw area in 2003 to sell for scrap!

Noisiest locos, DMU, EMU past and present

EMU wise for me the T&W Metro class 994s are the noisiest. You can hear them a mile off. No noise dampening insulation, single glazed opening windows, 2 compressors and 2 alternators per train... Loud. These days they don't switch the trains off any more as they don't turn back on so they're...

When do Sheffield TramTrains need TOPS codes to use Network Rail but LU do not?

The Tyne and Wear Metro doesn't use GSMR. It uses a Schnoor Industrieelektronik cab radio. When the Metro passes onto the Network Rail section the cab radio automatically switches over to Network Rail mode. The signaller has a separate computer on his desk for communicating with metro trains...

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

Nexus were offered 2 traction packages by Stadler. One was 80kmh max with a better acceleration rate and braking dynamics and the other was 100kmh but with poorer acceleration. Most metro stations are about 2 minutes apart on average so acceleration was prioritised which I have to say is a...
