    Tube train automated announcements 2005

Something else on the A Stock that might have made announcements a bit ineffective is that the volume would need to be way up to compete with the din created by the compressors on the A60’s in particular

    Best looking London Underground stations?

To add my two penneth on Hillingdon, I think if it was still showroom new, it would be a very impressive station (it sure was in the 90's), but it has not received any particular care and attention since its rebuilding, and it is really showing now (I am a daily user of Hillingdon station). As...

    2024 Tube Stock (Siemens Inspiro)

I suppose it will be like most fleet introductions/withdrawals... If a unit develops a terminal fault, it might be taken out of service (a la 5173 and 5197 in the case of the A Stock) prior to the new fleet coming on stream, but generally I'd expect to see 10 or so NTfL's available for service...

Class 230 units training/introduction on the Borderlands line: updates

I think that objectively we need to remind ourselves that the only bits of these trains which entered service in 1980 on the District line which are in use on today’s product are the body shells which play a minuscule role in reliability. Even the bogies date from the early 00’s.

[Portugal] Old locomotive will be refurbished back to operation.

As per ChiefPlanner - I did my Douro trip yesterday on what must have been the same rake - 3 or so red/cream Schindlers, the blue Schindler and a Sorefame coach. The experience was great fun - the driver was working the EE engine like nothing I’ve heard before, and giving the coaches a good work...

Reduced service on the Metropolitan Line from Monday 11 April 2022

That explains something on which I had a query - I saw 21015/16 pull into Hillingdon over the course of the last week or two and saw it had very fresh looking wheels and bogies. Is this linked to a programme lift at all?

    Class 317 withdrawals.

Likely scrap - a lot of trains have met their fate at Eastleigh already

    Class 313 flashovers

Flashovers are definitely not uncommon in DC motors, particularly in old DC motors. I remember when the A Stock was being withdrawn (when they were in their late 40’s/early 50’s), a few retirements were hastened by flashovers and burnouts.

Noisiest locos, DMU, EMU past and present

I’d like to throw the A60/62 Stocks in there for the desperately noisy compressor category.

    Gritty Underground Stations

As a semi-regular user of the station, my vote goes to the neglected Hillingdon (Swakeleys)

    Island Line Upgrade updates

Of course, they were bowing out on the London Underground Metropolitan line during my more youthful days, and their acceleration was often very slow if you wanted to get a good top speed (up to 70 mph) out of them. There was an option to accelerate faster, but limited the top speed to about 35 mph.

    Island Line Upgrade updates

I think what also doesn't help is that the 484's now have acceleration not unlike that of the A60/62 Stock, that surely must also cause its own problems RE: timekeeping.

Class 484 replacing class 483 on the island line: progress updates

@Gloster It appears 004 has been put in the shed for now, based on this photo: https://www.flickr.com/photos/james_pilbeam/50497118467/ According to separate commentary (please take this strictly as hearsay), 004 is still designated a runner, it was however overdue an exam. I must admit, from...

Abellio Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

Looks like Stowmarket to me, would make sense for the units coming off of the Bury St. Edmunds line going towards Ipswich.

142001+142015 different from the rest, why?

Diffident means a lack of self-confidence.

    Greater Anglia Rolling Stock Updates

Chubs, may I respectfully disagree with your analysis that old = worse? The Mk3's are now reaching the end, but they still pass for being reasonably comfortable and until we have their replacement in service to measure them against we shouldn't be assuming automatically that whatever replaces...

London Underground Prototype refurbishment trains how long did they last in service?

The 4-car prototype A Stock refurbished set (5132-6132-6133-5133) was reputed to have last until some point in 1993 when it went with 5169 to be refurbished properly.

First rolling stock you can remember travelling on?

A Stock on Metropolitan Line back in about 1997/8. My first national rail memory is a SWT 455 in around 2000.
