Heathrow Express travellers defecting to Elizabeth line

Not an issue after the May timetable change. Almost all the stops on the mains have gone at Slough.

Disruption between Castle Cary to Newbury (31/05): Anyone know why?

On Western it is an outright ban. There is zero red zone working. However this won’t be a factor with this.

'Paddington closure for OHLE work - 7 March'

Reception Line 1 is being taken out of use from Friars Jn. towards Paddington, as part of the HS2 works.

When Are You Impressed By The Railway

To suggest that the infrastructure is outdated on the WCML is possibly pushing it a bit far. The railways have had huge amounts spent on them, but probably need more. Remodelling at Milton Keynes, & Rugby have made a big difference. There is so much kit out there, so many different organisations...

    Delays Costs

Does anyone have any idea of how much Network Rail pay in delay costs per min? I guess it probably varies between local and long distance trains but even a ball park would be interesting to know!

DB Cargo guilty of safety breach at Tyne Yard leading to life changing injuries for 13 year old

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, is clear that, employers must “so far as is reasonably practicable” protect the health and safety of employees by removing or reducing workplace risks. This also covers visitors, contractors - ie anyone on site. If there are gates left open or not...

Crossrail opening delayed (opening date not yet known)

It is possible to do normal signalled moves from the NR infrastructure to the western tunnel. There have been moves made in both directions. That bit works.

    Mendip Rail traffic.

The Acton yard thing is interesting. The jumbo trains run up from the Mendips and split into many smaller strains serving the South East. Do DB actually own it or do the operate the yard? I can’t think of anywhere else this yard work could be done, and with Crossrail on the horizon getting more...

    A career as a signaller

Does anyone know whether they are both 12hrs now?

Disruption between London Paddington and Slough 16/17th Oct 2018

It would appear that all 4 lines are affected and they are all under possession this morning. That section of OLE is headspan so the wires are not mechanically separated as they would be on a portal system. All the new electrification west of Airport Jn is portal.

SWR - Holden Report into performance

IT's interesting that the reports identifies that the move of SWR control to the ROC has left a greater disconnect within the SWR organisation. I wonder whether this will reduce the interest for TOCs to relocate a small part of their organisation to ROCs?

Live signalling workstations in ROCs and SCs

Also not sure that Basingstoke ROC has any signalling in it at all at the moment. Basingstoke box does, but that's not in the ROC

    A career as a signaller

Does anyone have any information on the earliest dates that Woking, Wimbledon, or Feltham boxes may be relocated? I do realise its a bit of a guess job, but if anyone on the outside has any thoughts it would be useful. Thanks

Train planning: who decides platform allocations?

Can’t answer for that particular service but the ultimate decision rests with the signaller. It’s not unknown for the planning not to work and at a busy station it could be that the incoming move clashes with something else or a late runner. If another platform is free for that period then why...

    Bradford Interchange Signal Box

If the signaller sets the route incorrectly and the driver doesn't take it it's the signallers fault. The the driver takes the route the blame is 50/50. That is unless by the time the driver knows its the wrong route too late to stop (certain high speed junctions) in which case its the...

    Train Driving vs Bus Driving

So - not train driving, but signalling.... New signallers go to an intensive signalling school and then return to their boxes to pass out on their levers, panels or workstations. There will be a training guide which will have some approximate timescales for passing out, which will apply to both...

    Thameslink Services/Timetable from May 20th 2018

Thinking further - the biggest failure of the whole thing is not deciding to postpone the changes in the weeks leading up to the timetable change as the TOC's must have realised it was not going to be possible to achieve.

    Thameslink Services/Timetable from May 20th 2018

What simply doesn't stack up on the GTR side is that even if you say that the timetabling was very late there appears to be huge number of drivers who do not sign routes. Although timing alterations may mean that they need an extra few drivers here and there on certain routes, surely the vast...

    Bootle signal box

What terrible advice. Yes the NR interviews are structured around the non-technical skills, but they will probably ask about what you know of the job and it may give you the background to ask ask a sensible question. "I see that most of the traffic are Northern passenger services; is there much...
