ULEZ - Plans (and would you have to pay?)

Agree, there's plenty of opportunity to improve public transport in zones 4 and outwards. It requires investment but councils don't have the resources. Instead we get traffic clogged roads. 'Super loop' is tiny in the grand scheme of things.

Crossrail - operating discussion and opening day 24th May

What's the recommended interchange station from the Metropolitan line coming from Metroland? Farringdon, Moorgate or Liverpool St? Or carry on sub surface to Whitechapel? Or wait for Bond St to open, change from Met to Jubilee then change to Crossrail at Bond St?

Cyclists - your experiences on the road

I find the worst driver behaviour in london is when cycling down narrow residential roads, with cars parked either side. Cars driving from the opposite direction never give you enough space. To avoid getting squeezed, or doored from the parked cars, I now cycle in the middle of the road (or just...

End of all remaining Covid restrictions in England

Sadly there are a lot of uninformed people on here as well as everywhere. Social media and forums tend to result in bubbles of similar viewpoints that rarely engage with other bubbles and reinforce beliefs whether true or false.

Costs of covid response that many are not putting down to covid response

Why would zero COVID be attempted if it wasn't from fear of endemicity?

Costs of covid response that many are not putting down to covid response

Depends what you mean by 'irrational'. If you mean 'draconian', then China has the most draconian COVID policies (essentially aiming for zero COVID) which no Western nation has the ability to stomach.

Costs of covid response that many are not putting down to covid response

It makes sense, if there is no underlying economic growth, or a contraction, that excess money floating around would result in price inflation.

    TFL & "Managed Decline"

You'd have to introduce this with an escalating cost as you go further in. We've now got the infrastructure in at the North/South circular boundary thanks to ULEZ, so that could be the middle circle, with the inner circle being the existing congestion charge

    TFL & "Managed Decline"

London is very different from much of the rest of the UK in its density meaning that cars are not an option for many journeys (and rightly so). Although I think that tube and bus fares are already expensive, fares could be put up significantly without a huge dent in ridership. I imagine why Khan...

Does the Gold Card trick still work?

Was certainly useful for me before for long days at work, used to touch in ~0632 (TfL provide a little leeway) and return after the evening peak

    E-Scooter Fire at Parsons Green

All devices with lithium ion batteries are at risk of battery failure causing a fire. You may recall the ban on a certain model of Apple MacBooks from flights; some mobile phones etc. The quality of devices with batteries including e-scooters should be regulated, so only certified devices are...

    Changing conditions of carriage/travel

Exactly. Anyway, if you didn't want to wear a mask before, you could just claim an 'exemption' when (if...) stopped. The move is an attempt to preserve the status quo (most people wearing some sort of face covering however badly) now that national legislation is changing, and preserve the...

Pop-up Cycle Lanes and other Covid road-space restrictions

There are good bits and bad bits. Kensington High Street is brilliant and well used (although still needs junction improvements and might be removed by the intransigent council) whereas Uxbridge Rd in Harrow is super lazy and feels very much like 'we've provided x miles of cycle paths' dumping...

    UK face coverings discussion

No, what I mean is that evidence comes in different forms, a randomised controlled trial of masks is unlikely to happen, so the evidence has been built up through observational studies, epidemiology etc. You can very much base your initial approach on it if the intervention has minimal harm...

    Yeah this is quite reassuring.

    UK face coverings discussion

I don't think you quite understand how evidence works in Medicine and how long it takes to build up the case often through various modalities. Look how long it took to work out that smoking causes lung cancer, now this is undisputed (though still entirely legal to produce cancer-causing ciggies)

    UK face coverings discussion

I found this article from Prof Greenhalgh quite helpful when working around many of the excuses people have for not wearing masks. Face coverings for the public: Laying straw men to rest https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jep.13415

    UK face coverings discussion

I agree that it's a natural threat. We are continually at risk of forces of microbiological nature. It doesn't mean that we should let nature take its course. Wouldn't you take antibiotics or painkillers if you needed them? The argument seems bizarre. Besides, masks aren't meant to interfere...

    UK face coverings discussion

Sorry, I guess an off topic response, it was a response to the HSTEd's comment about changing society to suit Boomers, not specifically about mask evidence.
