    Themed graffiti

It's been mentioned before, but several years ago at Loughborough Junction (in The Land Of The Third Rail), two graffiti vandals weren't aware of overnight train movements and lost their lives.

    Another Landslip: Hassocks/Burgess Hill area

If the Arundel to Angmering chord was in place,, a run down the Arun valley would have been a diversion.

    Themed graffiti

What about advertisments on railway bridges? For example the WCML bridge over the North Circular Road at Stonebridge Park has the word FERODO painted in large letters. Walking back from The Ace, I wondered if JRR Tolkien used it as inspiration for the name of the lead character in Lord Of The Rings.

Euston station toilets in a disgusting state

The loos at London Bridge are being replaced. The existing Ladies and Gents are much-used. Last Wednesday morning there was a queue for the Ladies that stretched out of the entrance and into the shopping arcade. The queue was still there when I returned in the late afternoon. It makes me glad...

In an earlier part of this thread, an example was requested of Cambridge trains stopping at Alexandra Palace. Today (Feb 14th) the 13.38 Thameslink train for Cambridge stopped at Platform 3 of Alexandra Palace There were no events at Ally Pally and no crowds on the platfrom.

Thameslink Northbound Cambridge trains add a station after passing through the Core

In an odd piece of scheduling, northbound Thameslink trains that have passed through the Core are displayed as stopping at Finsbury park, Stevenage, Hitchin and all station to Cambridge. At Finsbury park an odd thing happens. The Platform display adds Alexandra Palace to the list and the train...

How common are dividing trains in the UK?

This is a question about where a divide takes place. During the rush hour periods, the Epsom - London Bridge semi-fast trains (all stations to Norwood Junction then fast to LBG) are 10-car. After the morning rush, they are 5-car. I'm asking where the divide takes place? Epsom? Are 5 cars left in...

    Famous people/celebrities you've met on a train

In 1965, I was travelling on a train to Birmingham. In the same compartment was Gwen Berryman (Doris Archer in the radio serial The Archers. The program wa recorded at a studio in Birmingham.

Inspector Sands at Finsbury Park 19/12/23

At 13.55 today (December 19th) "Inspector Sands to the Operations Room" was booming out all over Finsbury Park station. My train was about to leave so I never found out what the emergency was. Any ideas?

TRIVIA: Places with a North, South, East or West prefix that don't have a geographical opposite number

On the A272, at West Grinstead between Cowfold and the A24 in West Sussex, one goes over a hump that was a bridge over the branch line from Horsham to Shoreham. Was there not a West Grinstead station there in pre-Beeching days? South Croydon station has no matching North Croydon, although there...

On-train announcement phraseology no longer used

"This is a security message" is used before 'See it, Say it, Sorted' on Southern. Using the word 'Security' sets up a 'boy who cried 'wolf' situation so that if there really IS a security problem, passengers will have switched off by then. "If you see something that doesn't look right" is a...

Does anyone really not know about older people being eligible for concessionary travel passes?

London's Freedom Pass with its access to TfL services and the suburban rail network is an absolute gem, and the envy of those living outside the boundary of the London boroughs. OK, it is paid for by Council Tax, but I use mine at least once a week, on trains, buses and Tubes so I don't...

Doors opened on platform 7 at Guildford

Trains pulling into Platform 1 at Norwood Junction (the 'suburban' platform) are adjacent to platform 2. To get from 1 to 2 means two flights of stairs linked by the tunnel under the lines. Platform 2 is an island with platform 3. Commuters wishing to catch a 'London Bridge Fast' service from...

    Platform allocations

Platform allocation at East Croydon can be mysterious. A change from 1 or 2 to 3 or 4 will send crowds of people running/brisk walking/hobbling up those long slopes to the ticket hall. The change often occurs five or ten minutes before a scheduled time, barely enough to make the transfer.

Points trouble at Eastbourne gives unusual stopping pattern

This morning (Tues 28th Nov) as my Eastbourne-bound train stopped at Berwick, as well as Glynde, I sked the OBS "why the unusual stopping pattern?" She told me that faulty points at Eastbourne were preventing a full service to be run. We pulled into EBN Platform 2 with EBN Pl.3 empty, It would...

    Power drain at terminal stations

A train moving off must consume a lot of power. What if several trains are on the move together? The load on the station's traction power supply must be a big peak. Are the timetables aranged so that there is an timed offset to the number of trains that can be starting at one time? Are...

    Declassified First Class on GWR

GWR lost me as a cusomer this year. The journeys home from holidays in Torquay in 2020 and 2021 were spoilt with trains cancelled and 5-car sets sent from the West instead of 10. Packed and with out the First declassified. Added to that, there was the practice of 'turning' a train so that it...
