Swanage Railway - trains to Wareham 2024

"MR28] Swanage Railway, Dorset (MR p6): There will be no through Wareham services this year. Last year's service fulfilled the railway's commitment to the local council. The 2023 trains lost money - as in the earlier years - but was part of a 'deal' for a longer term lease. Inwards charters may...

How could heritage railways encourage more visitors to arrive by public transport?

Visited Bo'Ness & Kinneil Railway / Scottish Railway Preservation Society Museum in 2019. Obviously me being me that was a day trip: Horsham-St.Pancras, Kings Cross-Waverley-Linlithgow, bus. Same on the return. Pretty simple really. I use Google maps to locate bus stops, without which I'd be...

    Not-very-happy situation at Smallbrook Junction

Was keen to try the Emergency Phone at Smallbrook Junction so travelled from Horsham Thursday 7th September. Late afternoon at Havenstreet staff advised the last two Island Line trains at Smallbrook Junction (16:03 to Esplanade and 16:21 to Shanklin had again been cancelled). Took the 15:45 to...

    Not-very-happy situation at Smallbrook Junction

There have been almost daily cancellations on Island Line for weeks now. Bus to Wootton is the best option atm.

    Expired GTR Key Card

Poking around in the NR app it seems the start and expiry dates relate to the virtual KeyGo ticket held on the card. In my GTR account I see two virtual KeyGo tickets, one Loaded on card and the other Blocked.

    Not-very-happy situation at Smallbrook Junction

This thread is discussing public transports links to the IoWSR. Havenstreet doesn't have a public transport link so is really off-topic. Taking today 29 May 2023 as an example, the last scheduled IoWSR trains arrives Smallbrook Junction 15:56 and the last Island Line Ryde train departs 16:16...

    Not-very-happy situation at Smallbrook Junction

Wouldn't it have been better spending money on ticket issuing facilities at Wootton? Wootton has a bus service that runs for the entire IoWSR operating day unlike Smallbrook where the Island Line gives up in the middle of the afternoon (or doesn't run at all due to whatever the excuse of the day...

    Not-very-happy situation at Smallbrook Junction

The booking online system is really (i) a reservation system and (ii) a cash-flow device for the benefit of the Railway. If you book online you get a booking reference code which you take to the ticket office to be exchanged for a Ticket. There is a ticket office at Smallbrook Junction. Good job...

    313 Railtour?

Another great EMU tour, keep them coming! Hard to get my head around riding 4001/2001 on the Shepperton branch back in 1973 and the PEPs still running today!

Swanage Railway announce 2023 Wareham service

Forgot to say I saw a number of people who just showed their phones or a print of their email conformation. Also to note that email confirmations can be easily saved as PDF to your phone so a 4G signal is not required.

Swanage Railway announce 2023 Wareham service

Like other tourist railways which haven't quite understood the concept you are are issued with an e-ticket when you book which they then ask you to convert into a "travel ticket" when you arrive. I noted the lack of a booking office at Wareham but didn't get a reply on that. Anyway I've...

Battlefield and Embsay and Bolton lines??

Rough figures but UK steam railway visitors is something like this: 51% retired, 48% families and 1% enthusiasts. Figures change inside and outside of school holidays. Gala weekends skew the figures totally so can give the false impression that steam railways are visited mainly by enthusiasts...

Battlefield and Embsay and Bolton lines??

Worth visiting E&BAR for the NER autocar alone in my opinion. Only NER autocar with a wifi router in the electronics bay as far as I am aware! Combine with a visit to Skipton castle and boat trip on the canal or if you like a long walk, the Priory. Some lovely carriages and worth upgrading to...

Kent and East Sussex Railway: timetables

You click the specific date here and it shows the departures. Then click here for the timetable. Five departures for weekends in September. [The different colours alert you to different departure times even though the number of departures may be the same.] I'd guess five departures is done with...

    60163 Tornado 100mph charters?

The test run in 2017 where 100 mph was achieved was to gain certification for 90 mph running. Pretty obvious from that test that sustained 100 mph running is unachievable.

30 longest heritage preserved railways in the UK

I'm missing Ravenglass & Keith/Dufftown. Pre-covid I had Ravenglass on the books and ready to go. Keith/Dufftown slipped me by entirely! Retrospectively kicking myself as I visited Strathspey in 2019. On the SG lines I've done all bar Strathspey & SDR as public transport day trips (from...
