If you could create any direct services which currently don’t run which would you choose?

My fantasy favourite would be a Windermere to Manchester Airport electric service via Bolton and Manchester.

    Hydrogen powered trains ?

Tortally agree. I was not advocating wind power for the UK but advocating electric traction powered by an efficient power source. Dare I say nuclear in a UK context for example?

    Hydrogen powered trains ?

Agree that the Nederlands and Belgium have dense populations very suitable to electric traction. The point for me is the debate between on board power generation and electrification using environmentally efficient

    Hydrogen powered trains ?

By coincidence, did you read the press release from NS. They have just achieved 100% wind power for the whole railway system in the Nederlands, This was not achieved by self contained windmills on each train but by responsibly sourcing electricity from efficient North Sea wind farms delivered...

Idea: Class 360s to Cross Country: Could it work?

I attended a meeting a few weeks ago in the Class 309 buffet car currently at the ERM. Superb vehicles which were well received when they ran a Manchester to Stafford peak service. The Class 360 would also be received likewise if it were operated as a regional Manchester to Coventry service. If...

Northern timetable plan for May 2018

If the peak service is half hourly, my armchair planning department cannot see why half hourly off peak incurs extra resources, particularly as off peak these can be 2 cars, with some peak services 4 cars?

    May 2018 timetable changes

Open Train Times seems to also show several peak hour trains stopping at Guide Bride and Stalybridge then stops to Huddersfield. Hope these stops last

    Bigger trains on Northern

Thanks. I was also thinking specifically of soon to be electrified routes such as Manchester to Blackpool where even 2x2 23m Class 156s are already longer than 1x4 20 Class 319s. I have been on the 1609 ex Preston to MIA which is 6 car ie 2 Class 185s one from Barrow the other from Blackpool...

    Bigger trains on Northern

Are there any services operated by Northern with more than 4 cars to accommodate growth or is there a limitation to 4 cars on account of station platform lengths not being maintained to accommodate larger trains.

Northern timetable plan for May 2018

Have just joined so please forgive me if the situation has changed in respect of the May 2018 Buxton Line timetable. From the posts I gather that the intention is to withdraw the Disley stop in off peak Buxton trains, making this trip impossible after 150 years except by bus of a 30 minute wait...
