Photo on a Foot Crossing, Thoughts.

At a rough guess it must have been about 20 years before the footbridge was added. I now live hundreds of miles away so I can't pop out for a look.

Photo on a Foot Crossing, Thoughts.

Likewise, but it was a few decades ago. There was a pub across the river to which access was provided by ringing a bell and waiting for someone to row you across. Alternatively there was the railway bridge.

How does the lack of direct train services between large towns in Northern England compare with the South?

There are plenty of trains from Durham, although you've got to get there first. The earliest bus from Hartlepool to Durham arrives about 08:20 which is fine if that's as far as you want to go. If you sprint up the hill to the station you can get to Manchester at about 11:20. You can get to...

How does the lack of direct train services between large towns in Northern England compare with the South?

Here around Durham there were numerous lines when the pits were active, but after they closed I guess the railways lost most of their traffic. Lines were ripped up and stations closed. In East Durham the coast line survived, and there's an hourly service to various places but it's not that...

Crossrail - operating discussion and opening day 24th May

Some of us live Up t'Norf you know. But they ripped out our railways 60 years ago so we're stuck up here. And the BBC is down south around Manchester I think.

Crossrail - Construction updates and progress towards opening (now expected 24 May 2022)

I am quite familiar with the tube and getting around in London although I live in a village between Hartlepool and Durham. I lived around Slough for about 70 years. But I don't see any desire to call the mainline trains any different to what they've always been called, despite them going...

Crossrail - Construction updates and progress towards opening (now expected 24 May 2022)

That's a London-centric view though. People in, say, Maidenhead might have a different opinion. There's no tube in Maidenhead and the class 345 trains are already their local service - they're 'the train'. They're not going to call it 'the tube' from the 24th.

Trivia: cathedrals, abbeys and castles which can be seen from trains

You can hardly miss Windsor Castle, with two stations next to the castle.

Trivia: the most famous viaduct in Britain

When I lived in Berkshire I travelled over the Wharncliffe Viaduct more than most. Second was the viaduct on the Slough to Windsor branch line, with the wrought iron bowstring bridge over the Thames between Eton and Windsor. The Wharncliffe is known for its bat roosts, and part of the Slough to...

Crossrail - Construction updates and progress towards opening (now expected 24 May 2022)

Londoners might see it as a tube line, but those outside may not. Commuters on the GWML who already use the class 345 trains every day regard their journeys as being 'on the train'. For them nothing will change, other than timetables. Why would they switch to calling it 'the tube' when they...

    Prefabricated stations

I popped over there at noon and took a few shots, although the sun was still low in the sky and didn't help. The shelters have six 'seats' and room for a couple more to lean and a couple to stand. I suppose that's probably enough room during the day. The car park had 14 cars including mine so...

    Prefabricated stations

This one is used by disabled locals who had to struggle with buses before. There is a crossing nearby which has been made more secure with high fences and a gate recently. Enough locals wander across the track elsewhere on this line.

    Prefabricated stations

The station recently built at Horden on the Durham Coast Line is pretty minimal. Two platforms to suit 4 cars of Class 156 and a bridge connecting them. The ramps, folded back, ensure step-free access to the platforms but with about 150 metres walk to get from one to another. These take up most...

Which new rolling stock are you most looking forward to travel on (2022 and beyond)?

Here on the Durham Coast the 'new' trains that have replaced our Pacers are the marginally younger 156 Sprinters. If we are lucky we get a 30 year-old 158. I suppose these will remain in service until declared illegal or until the line get closed.

Will HS2 actually be an interesting journey from a passenger perspective?

A rather poor photo taken on a FGW HST in 2013 - the VOLO TV screens could display a moving map display and the train speed. The photo shows the route between Twyford and Maidenhead and 116 mph. These screens were removed in 2014.

    Live signalling diagrams

That's not surprising. Horden is a Durham pit village, and is on the coast line between Seaham and Hartlepool opened in 1905. All the stations along here were closed and removed in the 60's but the line survived. The new Horden station opened on 29th June last year, the GC HST in my avatar is...

    Live signalling diagrams

I use OTT now and then for looking at local trains. It's a bit more up-to-date than Traksy and shows Horden Station, the next one north of Hartlepool. Traksy omits Horden, which opened nearly 14 months ago, but shows the core Crossrail stations, not yet open. I suppose the latter are a bit more...

Grand central service disappeared, mandatory reservation and what to do

Well, the 1A60 service from Sunderland this morning has passed York and is still heading south. So some GC trains are running.

    uk.railway Google Group

Yes, sometimes mods do terminate interesting threads. But the last time I was on usenet, the lack of moderation lead to court action after accusations of child abuse and the accuser banned from the net for 6 months. When he was allowed back he continued as if nothing had happened.

Trivia: Most impressive stretch of line on the network?

I quite like the Piccadilly Line between Hounslow West and Earls Court. An odd choice, I suppose. The train emerges from the dark into the light, and from below the streets to above them. And coming out from the Heathrow tunnels it's a great relief to my ears. I also like the runs into major...
