Reopening to Padstow would generate more traffic than reopening Tavistock-Okehampton

I reckon a lot of local Cornish might use a train to Padstein, whereas currently, I doubt few venture there anymore - same as Snives

    Cornwall Metro funding approved

A pity Newquay Airport is not included. Maybe an integrated Airport bus from St Columb Road would work ??

HSTs in Mexico - news and progress updates

They look very good inside & out. Something similar would be perfect for Penzance/Paddington :lol::lol:

Analogue clocks on station buildings and other features - why only in Europe?

I live close enough to Penzance Town Clock to use the chimes to know the time of day. In common with most other local residents, we also know how to add on another 20 or so minutes in order to get the correct time :lol::lol:

ORR calls for more competition in station catering

True Bussy - but I'd still rather have a Warrens than a Greggs :E:E:E

Trivia: Quay side/ Harbour stations/ terminuses

Penzance Station ran right up to the harbour until the part nearest the station was infilled to create car parking. A spur led along the adjacent Albert Pier until the connection was severed in 1967. See Cornwall Railway Society: Penzance area - as far as Marazion >>

    Best boat journey?

For me it's the owner-skippered 'Express Skopelitis' in Greece that runs to & from Amorgos & Naxos, stopping at Donousa, Koufonisi, Schoinousa & Irakleia.

    Lorries Pulling Out at Roundabouts.

That's probably due to lorries needing a completely different driving style to maintain momentum. Lorry drivers will be timing their actions long before a car driver and with a much higher driving position can see much further ahead and to the sides than car drivers. So whilst it may not have...

Most exotic licence plate personally spotted on UK road

British trucks regularly ran far afield as far as Pakistan (occasionally India), Russia, the Chinese Border at Almaty, all over the Arabian Peninsula, and as far south as Nigeria in Africa. Not very common for Brits now, but the reverse is still happening. Iranians & Turks, Uzbeks, Kazaks, etc...

Well almost, but the crown for the worst goes to Ginsters .

    Portsmouth Harbour-Cardiff Central GWR

I used to use this service weekly from Bristol to Southampton & return in the mid 80s. Whilst it was a Plodder it was reliable and usually within ten or so minutes of the timetable. The 5-car Mark1 coaches were comfortable and many were re-furbished, they did sew the armrests in the closed...

Being a train driver is "easy snd stress free" according to the sun

In my younger days, I was a Deck/Navigating officer in the Merchant Navy. Back then it took on average between 4/5 years to qualify. Once qualified life was generally fairly easy, as we used to say "We aren't paid for what we do, we are paid for what we know" Doing what we knew, was similar to...

East Yelland power station, North Devon.

Maybe this refers to one of the transformer shipments There’s been a 162-ton transformer sitting at the dockside in Penzance since Thursday. It’s been quite a talking point – this huge white mass of cylinders. One thing was certain – it wouldn’t be staying there for ever. Apparently it’s bound...

Railway Worker Sacked for Drinking 'Herbal Tea'

Poppy seeds are regularly used in Curry, I often fry a couple of teaspoons along with Cumin seeds when starting the sauce.

    Smoking at Railway Stations... Illegal?

A while ago on a 5hr+ journey to Paddington, before smoking was outlawed on platforms, I would usually detrain at a few stops where I knew there were 2 or 3 minutes booked for the stop. On one journey home, I was on the platform at Exeter when the Guard asked me to get back on board and smoke...

The railways in 1963 vs 2023 - what would you prefer?

1963 definitely. You could turn up at almost any station and ask for a ticket to almost anywhere else and within no time at all you would be given a piece of cardboard that would enable you to go exactly where you wanted and at a reasonable price. You didn't have to book a few days before to...

How can Paddington - Penzance services be sped up

Maybe changing now that the Gatwick service is even worse & Crossrail/Farringdon much better.
