Are windscreen wipers on trains any good?

Being out in the snow in a 37 on the secondmans side usually seems to mean the wiped area gets smaller and smaller as the snow builds up at each side until you can clear it off. The wiper blades themselves are fairly beefy but the mechanism would be the weak points and as others have noted the...

LED traffic lights - are they a distraction for train drivers?

Certainly the traffic lights in Inverness for rose street roundabout when they were newly installed had to have various changes before the hoods they currently have were fitted due to drivers advising the green from them looked like it came from the next signal they were looking for as they...

Do the Colas 67’s have the RETB wiring in place for its aerial and gps? The wiring is ‘permanent’ even if the Cab Display Radio can be removed. There was much hassle using portable radios in 67’s before they left due to electrical interference at one end of the locos when DB withdrew their only...

Closure of the level crossing between Dalwhinnie and Ben Alder estate

If someone says that trains are really noisy I then know they have little to no relevant experience of the railway….. As others have said there are risk assessments carried out for every level crossing, they will take into account history of abuse, average amount of crossings requested (vehicles...

Closure of the level crossing between Dalwhinnie and Ben Alder estate

If a signaller can be charged after the death of a member of public due to their actions as happened at Moreton on Lugg does common sense not tell you that if a Manager overrides the system in place to keep a crossing open, that they are then leaving themselves open if an incident occurs...

Closure of the level crossing between Dalwhinnie and Ben Alder estate

Yes but that system was designed as a budget installation and would need a fair amount of redesign work as well as extra detection and ‘intelligence’ so it knows what’s trains stop and which don’t. The other systems which know whether trains stopped is dictated by signallers selecting such or...

Closure of the level crossing between Dalwhinnie and Ben Alder estate

I believe Dalnaspidal crossing is 'pogo' gates which are operated by treadle, as simple cheapish system but if you have a location where some trains are non stoppers and others call at a station within the area where treadles would go it wont work due to the differences in times between...

Closure of the level crossing between Dalwhinnie and Ben Alder estate

Yes but that radio is interlocked isn’t it. Those plans are not guaranteed and are down the line among the list of improvements planned on RETB lines but iirc the points are higher up the list. Plus the radio is currently used to find out the trains location so users are not kept waiting longer...

Closure of the level crossing between Dalwhinnie and Ben Alder estate

I will bet you it is! What radio network are you using, is it secure, to lock/unlock the gate well that’s now got to be interlocked into the signalling system in some way too, now you have an extortionate cost for one crossing and Why would control be doing controlling this? they have enough to...

Closure of the level crossing between Dalwhinnie and Ben Alder estate

If most crossing incidents appeared in newspapers, near misses or otherwise, there would be no room for any other news. Something has obviously triggered the closure, so, and I am assuming here, one or more of the safety standards relating to this crossing are not being met. What has changed i...

    Redundant lineside solar panels?

Could also be Traction Gel Applicators, usually activated during autumn to pump alleviate onto the railhead to help with adhesion.

5x Class 153 conversion to bike and baggage vans for Scotrail

Yep, hence the ' ' either side of plusher ;)

5x Class 153 conversion to bike and baggage vans for Scotrail

Yes you can do that. They seems to be saying the 'plusher' seating and also hospitality that are available in the 153 are the benefits. Not sure what extra hospitality that would be and seats may be an admission the new ironing board ones are not that comfy maybe lol

    Caledonian Sleeper

Others have previously advised that if more locos were to be converted then Serco would have to request them as the current contract is what dictated how many were converted in the first place and it would be SERCO who would need to possibly pass over more money to GBRf for this. At least that...

5x Class 153 conversion to bike and baggage vans for Scotrail

Not the case, see Scotraildrivers reply above. The plan has always been for them to also get to Fort William but initially they could slot straight into the Oban trains and start without major changes, New occupied tokens now available at Oban for example. Also why they have been gauge cleared...

£94 million investment Fort William Aluminium

They are measured from Stop Board to the fouling marker usually so likely top boards are not exactly adjacent to each other??

All equipment is there on the ground, small vegetation removal on the sawmill side of the boundary and some other repairs required from the sidings owners but i believe there has been quite a bit of work done already inside there with track repairs and veg removal? Spean Bridge can accommodate...

5x Class 153 conversion to bike and baggage vans for Scotrail

Is that the sets that had retb wiring carried out? As InOban states above it was a franchise commitment that was requested to be changed but was turned down and of the course the flip side as also stated is the financial climate which could change things now but will have to wait and see.

5x Class 153 conversion to bike and baggage vans for Scotrail

from what I remember, the 153 was the more awkward unit to gauge clear compared to the 158 possibly due to the steps on their bogies!?! Thanks LOM for further confirmation although be interested to hear from 158725 of their reference material as to why 158’s wouldn’t be cleared anytime soon...
