    Advice on trip to Australia

Sorry arrived late to this. Did you say which part of Australia you're coming to? Most of Sydney's beaches are not rail served - but you're never more than a bus ride away. Sydney's commuter network is fantastic. If you want a waterside railway experience, get the Newcastle line north and get...

Closed Passenger Stations still retaining B.R. Regional Signage after Passenger Closure?

Halifax had its disused platforms resigned in Tangerine I believe - this photo taken in 1968 by forum member CrossCity. Aug68. Halifax. 'Calder Valley' BRCW DMU. [Slide_0003] | Flickr I've also attached a short video I took in 2019. This is Dubbo station in regional New South Wales. The bay...

Worst examples of BR era "vandalism"?

I believe the tunnel wasn't constructed for predominantly diesel haulage - Portland cement or something?? Would have required serious work to render it usable and/or conversion of the line and those that fed into it to 25Kv. I think that argument has been done to death (even though I wish it was...

    Longest line of sight (UK)

I was flat out spotting two paces in front of me. Ironically later in the day, the view from Conwy Castle was fantastic.

    Longest line of sight (UK)

I forgot that I made it back to the UK in Dec 2022 and decided to investigate one of the famous views on this thread. Ladies and Gentlemen I give you the Isle of Man from the top of the Great Orme. I think.

Rishi Sunak and the Conservative Party.

Australia - like many liberal democracies - has its problems. It is however a magnificent country, even though the hard right is very shouty and gets a pretty easy ride from the media. Please come and visit.

V/Line Melbourne Loco Hauled: Remaining Services

Pre-Covid did Bairnsdale-Melbourne and Melbourne-Albury loco hauled. I actually think apart from a trip to Lake Balaton in Hungary in the late 1990s it was the first time I'd gone loco hauled since the Trans-Pennine went over to DMUs. I understand the economics of using multiple units but there...

What was the last change you were genuinely excited about?

Introduction of GC Bradford - London. Halifax is in the wrong place for major services calling but it gives it a hint of a more major station. Bang in a third platform and some wires and I'll die happy.

    Bradford Southern Gateway Station

I think Rochester beat Bradford to it - their rail links aren't crash hot either.

    Town twinning

Halifax is twinned with Aachen - I think it’s an early post-ww2 making friends arrangement. I don’t think it’s twinned with any of the Halifax’s around the world which seems a bit of an oversight.

Disused viaduct and a temporary railway?

Thank you so much - yes it was this.

Disused viaduct and a temporary railway?

Thanks all - no it was a temporary narrow gauge steam installation and was there as part of some fete/gala? Im thinking Shepton Mallett? Sorry for being vague.

Disused viaduct and a temporary railway?

I’m sure I once saw a tv program where they put down a temporary miniature railway on a disused main line viaduct - Somerset and Dorset maybe? Did I imagine this? Anyone………

Railway locations that are now only a shadow of themselves

North Bridge formation gone by the early 80s although I’m yet to see any images from the last coal trains in the 70s. You could argue that the service levels are better though than they’ve ever been?

Burning car crashes into bus in West Vale (27/04/2023)

Poor bus just wanted to go about its business. One would assume it may be spending some time out of service. https://www.halifaxcourier.co.uk/news/people/west-vale-bus-drama-dramatic-video-of-car-on-fire-crashing-into-bus-in-calderdale-village-today-4120893

    Shared train types?

With the Tangara - you have to remember the stock they replaced dated from the 1920s - I'm told when they first appeared it was like the martians had landed. When the V set was introduced it was marketed as "the most luxurious commuter stock in the world" - I think the last bush plum update is...

    Shared train types?

I’m not passionate about the endeavour but it does the job, the xplorer version is much better and in fact I enjoy them more than the XPT. I wouldn’t want to long distance on a Hunter but it’s a good unit for what and where it is used. My heart belongs to the V set - so I’m on countdown to...

    Shared train types?

I'm British but I live in Australia. I've always been fascinated by our XPTs over here, heavily reengineered for the climate and track standards, but still recognisably a HST. I was at the station the other day when one of our Endeavour DMU sets came past - great trains and have served NSW...
