Do you think that the UK switching to electric vehicles is realistic?

Much, much nicer to drive than an automatic. No slushiness when you push the accelerator, no trying to constantly creep forward when stopped. Just instant torque and power delivered the instant you squeeze the pedal. I barely use the brakes, basically only use the brake pedal if I've misjudged...

    Glasgow Subway new stock

Hopefully I can get up to Glasgow soon for a go all ride on the Metro-Cammell stock. I love the proper tube train noises they make.

Abellio Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

I did notice the new window stickers on the raised section s warning about the step down/up. Still think they are great trains!

Abellio Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

Crikey! They must have really clobbered themselves to smash toughened glass! Hopefully they get replaced.

Abellio Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

Went to London by train for the first time in ages. 745/0 both ways. Why have some of the luggage racks been removed? It looks most peculiar and with no rhyme not reason to which ones are removed. For example on the train home we were sat at the raised bay of 4 tables next to one of the "dummy...

    37 southbound on M11 yesterday

I was driving north and saw a 37 (I think 37714, definitely that sort of livery and it was named) heading south around the North Weald area. Anyone know where it was going?

Beeching Cuts and the Big Four

That's an interesting point, why did the Big Four do so little rationalisation? Even though a lot of freight still went to local stations, many of the lines must have been heavily loss making.

Ticket machines: Why has QWERTY been abandoned?

I can type a random string of letters and numbers far more quickly on a qwerty keyboard than one with the keys arranged alphabetically. Nah. You just use a library for stuff like that, you don't write a keyboard function for every program, you just call the keyboard function from whatever...

    Balsall Common Viaduct

It's going to a terribly boring journey for passengers. Loads of needless tunnels, the majority of the rest of the route in cuttings and even the raised sections with these barriers.

    Derailment near Grange Over Sands

Crikey, looks like most of the vehicles fully derailed. Bet that was exciting for a little while. But it really is testament to modern standards that everyone walked away. I know people miss old stock for a variety of reasons, but this is the kind of accident which would have resulted in coaches...

Network Rail removes Islamic message on King's Cross display boards after fierce criticism

Nor do I, and none of it is appropriate IMO. People of course are free to practise whatever religion they want to, express their sexuality etc but none of it has anything whatsoever to do with providing a train service.

Network Rail removes Islamic message on King's Cross display boards after fierce criticism

Nope, sorry religious text has no place at all, under any circumstances on an information display. Indeed. However where do you draw the line between quoting scripture (which most definit2ly is proselytising, and something "generically religious"? Why even bring religion into that public realm...

Network Rail removes Islamic message on King's Cross display boards after fierce criticism

There shouldn't be any religious or political message of any kind whatsoever on any public information display. That includes "Merry Christmas" by the way. Totally inappropriate to be proselytising to people who are just trying to find out when their train is due.

Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

Yeah Ted Baker clothes are decent quality I find. Not sure what will fill that void, it's a shame.

    Azuma seating

At least the LNER ones don't have a support bar pressing into your thighs like the GWR ones do.

    Azuma seating

It is indeed a commuter seat design. Specced by the DfT to save a few pennies. Hitachi folk were horrified and attempted to have the seats they'd originally specced included by DfT was having none of it.

Is there way of making the Caledonian Sleeper more profitable?

Exactly. The reality is people get into the bunk more or less fully clothed, and go to sleep, or try to. The potential issues are really quite imaginary.

    East Anglia planned pylons

Take a look at an OS map. East Anglia is actually quite densely villaged. You don't go very far before coming across a settlement.

    2024 Tube Stock (Siemens Inspiro)

Was that the replacement of the punched card readers etc with digital control of points and signals? ISTR reading an article years ago talking about how many of the junctions were still controlled with paper tape and punched card machines saying back to the 1930s.

    2024 Tube Stock (Siemens Inspiro)

That's not unique to London, many city bus services do t go across the centre, or have stopped doing so. When I first went to Nottingham university in the early 2000s, many bus services went across the city. That was stopped en masse, the reason cited was that traffic congestion in the city...
