Northern City Line not fit for purpose

I travelled on it for the first time today, I was amazed to see the Network SE signage in the platforms! It shocks me that this wasn't incorporated into Crossrail, as Crossrail has a shaft at Moorgate! I think it suffers from limited usage, due to it's dead-end nature. If it had been scoped into...

GB Railfreight in 'locomotive acquisition' talks

66 doesn't have any fire suppression systems. That's not really the issue though, I know from Crossrail that it's a nightmare having 66's in enclosed spaces; there's a massive issue with fumes. Crossrail even had fans and ventilation shafts, as well as the stations themselves. There's none of...

Ah, so what I said that I heard about Cat engines could be correct then?

GB Railfreight in 'locomotive acquisition' talks

As I understand it, everything above the bogies is being ripped out and replaced by GM or Caterpillar parts, not sure which. They went to Longport, so I'm guessing GM (EMD). It's been said that they'll be Eurospec 66's in a 56 shell.

GB Railfreight in 'locomotive acquisition' talks

I think it's mainly due to standardisation. Keeps costs down if EMD can do everything. HOWEVER, I've heard that it might not be the same mover as in the 66, but a different GM engine or even a Caterpillar engine in the 56's.

    GBRf Class 66 cab differences?

The Eurospec cab (752 to 779) is good for some things, but overall disliked. The German and Dutch ones are similar to the Eurospec. It's harder to reach the controls when shunting by handsignals and looking out the window i.e. squeezing up. The placement of some controls is better, but that...

    Class 60s toton

No April fools, that's me in the attached photo. But I don't know, they might well be a different GM engine. The 56 stuff was something said by the folks at the top, then the specifics were all rumour until we saw them shunted together at Leicester, apparently on their way down to Eastleigh.

    Class 60s toton

Lets just say I've heard it from the people who were there and have made these actual decisions. They happen to be my bosses.

GB Railfreight in 'locomotive acquisition' talks

That's true, but who else is going to come knocking now? They can either sit and rot, making DB nothing, or they sell a few and make something on parts. So it would seem now that GBRf are going elsewhere and obtaining 56's to overhaul. Opportunity lost.

    The Leicester 56s.

I have no idea! The discussion was continued in the other thread.

GB Railfreight in 'locomotive acquisition' talks

Well I think it's typical DB wanting to hold all the cards while balancing upon a house of them. You have to wonder if it's now the place of a fair competition authority to get involved because it's things like this that will drag down the freight industry overall. I thought that about the...

GB Railfreight in 'locomotive acquisition' talks

GBRf can't get 60's, I believe they tried but wanted to overhaul them at Brush. DB wouldn't let anyone take them away without DB doing all the overhaul, like they did for Colas. I was told that GBRf realised that they couldn't get the loco's away by road because they're too heavy for a nearby...

    Class 60s toton

I don't know for certain, but at some stage, GBRf were apparently interested. I'd love to see it happen, they'd be great for the work over the MML.

A career as a train driver

OK, so I'm new here and there's a LOT of information on this regarding TOCs and their requirements. If there's anyone interested in finding out about Freight operating companies, I hope that throwing in my lot will help... I work for a FOC and to be honest, becoming a driver is almost a...

    Future of the Class 89

I clearly remember seeing that as a kid. I don't remember the Intercity colours, but the blue and red really burnt an image in my memory. I think a part of it may have been the striking design as well.
