Where will the electricity come from?

Being as the subject of this thread is "Where will the electricity come from?", Yes it is! This is a Government issue and is therefore not in the scope of this forum Why not? if there is demand for rail services and 'space' in terms of maintainence - then why not? You have already said...

    Structured interview for drivers

My advice would be: 1) Give rock solid examples specifically answering what they ask on the prep-sheet 2) Be prepared to talk about what you have written in extreme detail 3) Think about what the interviewer might be looking for and try to tailor your answers accordingly 4) Listen to...

BR brand names - still exist?

I did read somewhere I while ago that new franchises will be 'encouraged' to take non-branded names such as 'East Coast, Great Western etc...' Not sure if this is being implimented but it would be nice to see Intercity and Regional back in use. Customers don't understand what HST or...

    Best All Round DMU

I personally like te 158's (when they work) but have got a few serious issues including dodgy air-con, failing doors, stench of toilet waste, low power and door control panel problems. But having said that, they are nice to use once in a while when everything is working.

Big Stations with no Ticket Barriers

I am not going to get into an arguement over something as trivial as 'whether auto-barriers' are a good idea or not. The original thread was asking something totally different. My ending thoughts on the subject are: 1) National Rail, TOC's and the Health and Safety Exec all agree that...

Big Stations with no Ticket Barriers

I agree! Barriers are not the ONE and ONLY way of stopping fare evasion. However I do agree that they are at the moment the best way we have in the UK at stopping oppertunist fare evasion. We have such a wide ranging mix of railway 'systems' in place in the Uk ranging from Conductor's doing...

Where will the electricity come from?

As an employee of the power industry - I can safely tell you that in the grand scheme of the National Grid - trains only use a tiny amount of electricity compared with other areas of industry or residential use. The only problem that could be caused with electrification is local grid power...

Big Stations with no Ticket Barriers

Not countries but do employ different railway models to the rest of the US. I am amazed at how some people still think human ticket checks are appropiate for every train journey in the UK. They are not, the facts speak for themselves. No system is fool proof, but barriers at the current...

Big Stations with no Ticket Barriers

    1) As you know, the National conditions of carriage state you need to buy before you board. These barriers simply enforce this. You could say that about anything that involves paying for something. If I go to Tesco for some food and don't have time to pay for it - can I just walk out? 2)...

    ticket examiner Ayr

I presume they should be recruiting extra TE's for Glasgow Central too soon due to the ongoing electrification of the Paisley Canal line and also the fact the Ayr trains are increasing in frequency.

FirstGroup vies with Virgin in west coast rail bidding war

I personally don't think it will make any difference who the parent operating company is - certainly not to customers. Franchises are over-strict in the UK, frequency of services, fare increases, lengths of trains, type of trains etc... No matter who get the next franchise - it will be the...

    Voyagers engines at stations

When the engine management computers detects a drop in voltage across its serial buses, the alternator requires a higher rpm to help recharge the batteries. Its automatic. (like a car, electrics take a feed off the batteries and in turn the battery takes a feed from the carriage alternator).

It's just an 'off the shelf' piece of recruitment software that helps pre-screen certain applications.

    FSR online tests

The staff in Swindon deal with your application. It's only when you get 'invited' to attend the assessment day at Scotrail then your details get passed to the HR staff at Scotrail. The initial sifting is all done at Swindon.

    156503 @ Carlisle

True! I imagine options are (if it is an AWS/TPWS fault): - Drive from the other end (if faulty end was trailing) - Couple to another DMU and drive - Drive with 2 qualified drivers for additional observation - Send fitters to fix original fault - GSM-R MCB are always tripped when out of...

Driver Only Operation (DOO) - When will it arrive?

I personally think that there will always have some staff on some trains. Technically and operationally speaking - they don't have to be traditional guards. New technology is making the role redundant (such as CCTV, door sensors, GSM-R, ERMTS and various on-train management systems)...

3000 applicants so far for TPE trainee dvr jobs!

TPE must be one of the fastest growing TOC's at the min. They are opening new depots in Preston and Liverpool - lots of their routes are being wired and they have excellent performance figures.
