Minor things on trains which irritate you

Surely a Trainspotter would know that ?

Minor things on trains which irritate you

What else annoys me above all else ? Auto announcers everywhere on trains and stations Noisy, screeching brakes on newer trains The strange noises made by many modern EMU's during acceleration and regenerative braking And even freight depots aren't free from annoying noises. You get the...

    Electrically hauled freight

The freightliners are longer than before mainly due to the high power of the Class 66. (it's always going to be a 66 at a minimum these days so no need to reduce the load )

Minor things on trains which irritate you

The noisy screaching brakes on the Class 800/801/802 series

Trivia: from which stations can you see/hear your train coming when it's still miles away?

At Barnetby you used to be able to hear the freight approaching a long time before it came into sight, particularly at night. Probably less so today due to there being much less freight around and what does run is now hauled by the much quieter Class 66 hauling newer quieter wagons, and less...

    Most reliable locomotive?

Most reliable diesel locomotive has got to be the Class 66. Some of the Electric locomotives might be more reliable, as there are less moving parts and less to go wrong.

    Electrically hauled freight

Privatisation has become more about profits and less about being Green ? I have seen that all over the freight sector since privatisation. If it is more profitable to use a Diesel loco on a freight working then that is what will be used. Switching from Electric to Diesel is one thing. Under...

Working time directive - opt in or out.

If you work somewhere where Sundays are Committed but outside the working week, you will be working 45 hours a week anyway on some weeks with not really much choice of doing any less.

Minor things on trains which irritate you

Yes 323's, 331's and 350's make some very odd noises Older EMU's like 319's, 325's and 507's sound much more normal for an Electric powered vehicle

Minor things on trains which irritate you

Mk1 coaches have all got seats arranged in bays, always 4 around a table. Solo travellers do not want this arrangement. You get more privacy with airline style seating.

TOCs with Sundays in Working Week (Drivers / Guards)

At Northern there are two "Golden Sundays" that can be used per year to get rid of two committed Sundays. But they have to be used 10 days in advanced, so there is no way of knowing if wasting a "Golden Sunday" on a Committed Sunday that could have got covered anyway.

    Electrically hauled freight

In the 90's there was a very lot of electric hauled freight on the WCML 1645211294 There was in the 90s as well

TOCs with Sundays in Working Week (Drivers / Guards)

I have heard of some Drivers paying others £100 or so to volunteer to work their committed Sunday's for them at Northern

    Electrically hauled freight

The car trains that go over the North WCML at night (Mossend/Dagenham?) used to be 90-hauled. Now always a 66 for some reason. I don't think DB use their 90's very much. I think I read once that only a very small number of the fleet are out at any given moment. If it wasn't for the Sleeper...

Minor things on trains which irritate you

That's great news. I'm also glad to say that they've scrapped the repetetive Covid 19 announcements which used to go off at every station stop. The auto announcements don't go on half as much as they used to now. I have often said that they spoil the journey.

    Electrically hauled freight

There are no more 92's on freight on the WCML anymore which means the 66's have taken over. Only Electric hauled freight is 88 and 90 hauled, mainly Intermodals. 90's used to haul freight single headedly but now they seem to be in pairs most of the time. The 88's are almost always single...

TOCs with Sundays in Working Week (Drivers / Guards)

Often you'll find the Job Description and even the Contract mentions a 35 hour week which is misleading when new starters find out they have to work 9 to 10 hours of forced overtime every 3 to 6 weeks (depending on depot) It is a lot of overtime. Sunday's outside the working week should mean...

    Litter on the Atherton Line

First trip over the Atherton Line in daylight for a while and I can't believe how much litter there now is along this line. Once past Salford Crescent there is fly tipping all the way. Never seen it so bad, do Network Rail ever do anything about it ?

TOCs with Sundays in Working Week (Drivers / Guards)

Sunday's for Northern are Outside, COMMITTED for West Drivers. You can give 5 years notice and still have to do it if there is no cover. 1645053363 Yes it is quite notable how many Sunday's there are in the Newton Heath Depot Driver roster. At least one every 2 weeks. I thought the 1 Sunday...
