    TPX 802

It is classed as Colton Junction but in reality Automatic Power Change Over (APCO) takes place at Chaloners Whin. Church Fenton APCO site should be live by the end of 2024.

TPE Nova 3 (Class 68 + Mk5s) updates and withdrawal from service

There is only a very small pool of less than 10 TPE managers who are competent to manually couple/uncouple in an emergency. TPE get round this because essentially, once the Driver declares the train a failure, under the network code it is Network Rail’s responsibility to clear Mainline as soon...

TPE Nova 3 (Class 68 + Mk5s) updates and withdrawal from service

Scarborough LMD comes back online from December 2022 for both servicing at night, and ‘Splash & Dash’ during the day.

TPE Nova 3 (Class 68 + Mk5s) updates and withdrawal from service

Some training can be, but it’s all about risk aversion and all Driver tasks have been risk assessed to see if they can be completed on passenger trains. Completing tasks on ECS workings means that it takes place in a more controlled environment and training can generally be more comprehensive...

TPE Nova 3 (Class 68 + Mk5s) updates and withdrawal from service

4 diagrams in passenger service, which ultimately is what the ‘customer’ wants to see, but behind that there is a lot more going on. I agree with you about the MK5A sets, but all the leased 68’s (that are not on maintenance) are being used. Any 68’s that have appeared on freight work are...

Can a Train Driver open doors when it’s too hot on the train if aircon doesn’t work.

As @GadgetMan has said this is the same at the company I work for. It’s better to try and arrange things whilst they are in your control, rather than letting it get out of hand and having a full scale uncontrolled evacuation with the risk of someone being struck by a train.

Class 68 - Leeds Midland Road

TPE regularly send Class 68’s which are participating in light loco Driver training for fuel to Leeds Midland Road too.

TPE Mark 5A coaching stock progress

This is unfortunately incorrectly. The work that has been underway (completed 14/11/21) was to make the necessary adjustments for Class 185 traction. Class 68’s & Mk5A are route cleared and have already completed the internal station verification works. Class 185’s have not, and this can not be...

Human element - manual vs automated announcements on trains.

Thats interesting, which Desiro sets are these? On the Class 185's automatic announcements can announced with/without a Drivers Key in. The Headcode needs to be inputted into the HMI however, but this can be done by a Driver or Conductor. There is also a list of 'Emergency' or 'Get Me Home'...

Train sitting in the station with doors locked, passengers waiting outside

At our company it is standard procedure to have the train doors locked when trains are left in a station for more than 30 minutes due to the risk of terror attacks, trains which are left unattended by train crew, trains being cleaned and where a brake test/brake overcharge could take place. If...

2 x Class 185s, all passengers at York crammed into the front unit

Class 185 C-ASDO (Coach - Automatic Selective Door Operation) is a coach based operating system, you have to have the whole coach on the platform and the system can not just lock 1 set of doors out on a vehicle. As the train rolls into the platform, it rolls over a beacon (set 13.5m from the...

TPE Nova 3 (Class 68 + Mk5s) updates and withdrawal from service

Also, just to add to this. I think* TPE only have to ensure that the noise on the depot is kept to a minimum and not when the sets are running on Network Rail metals. Which currently from a train crew point of view they are doing - lots of things have changed since these sets came in, such as...

TPE Nova 3 (Class 68 + Mk5s) updates and withdrawal from service

Stabling of 68's & Mk5A's for more than 4hrs is not currently permitted without a full train prep by a driver or fitter which requires access to a full underframe walk around for just under 1hr time wise is allocated in diagramming. If you look at current diagrams you will not see anything...

TPE Nova 3 (Class 68 + Mk5s) updates and withdrawal from service

Other issues then arrise such as having someone who is competent to couple and uncouple (TPE Drivers and Guards are not competent) and the need of an additional brake continuity test, all adding time and expense to the situation. Additional train paths etc. Using a 185 for the first/last...

TPE Nova 3 (Class 68 + Mk5s) updates and withdrawal from service

The first set off the depot leaves at around 0505 for 1T52 (0534 to York) 20minutes prior the Loco is started without ETS supplied to the coaches as this creates more noise and this is in an effort to 'improve' the situation for the minor number of residents who are complaining. The first set...

Question about Standedge double-line railway tunnel

Yes, that's right. I think if memory serves correct photo shows the 'Redbrook Down Cast' shaft. This shaft creates ventilation for the railway tunnel by means of a water spray system, water is collected at the surface by troughs and trays and is then dispersed down the shaft itself. A series of...

Question about Standedge double-line railway tunnel

Only the light from that lamp and the camera on my phone. I was impressed! Its a strange feeling standing underneath that shaft with two trains passing. The wind was really powerful. My jacket would have easily been blown off if I wasn't holding onto it! 1613429900 The canal tunnel is...

Question about Standedge double-line railway tunnel

I think this has changed now and you can be in the boat whilst it is towed through, with engine cut.

Question about Standedge double-line railway tunnel

They do public trips through the canal tunnel (or did before Covid) they do a 500m in and out one or a full length tour. I have done both and would recommend.
