Which train type will you miss the least when they are all withdrawn?

Pendolinos. An absolute abomination and the sooner they’re all carted off for scrap the better. Cramped, uninspiring and uncomfortable; even the recent refurb hasn’t done much in the way of making them any more palatable (and proves once again that you can’t polish a turd).

    Personal Nostalgia

So many memories… Our house used to back onto the freight-only line between Warrington Arpley and Ditton, so there were always 20s and 56s scuttling back and forth between Fiddlers Ferry PS and Arpley; 25s, 37s, 40s and the ubiquitous ‘Duffs’ on trip workings/speedlink services. Crewe was also...

why the caution over head wires sign on a class 158

Believe it’s to signify which car is which; i.e. ‘2’ for the 52xxx car and ‘7’ for the 57xxx car.

Should a Class 365 unit be preserved?

    Cheers for the confirmation.

Should a Class 365 unit be preserved?

Pretty sure that two of the cars from 365526 ended up at RAF Spadeadam for ‘target practice’ (whatever that entailed). I think it’s pretty safe to say they aren’t extant anymore.

Your favourite loco(s) aka Your Machine.

My avatar says otherwise, but at least we have good taste

Your favourite loco(s) aka Your Machine.

Always been a fan of 20s. 20168 was my ‘pet’ loco, primarily because it felt like I used to see it on a daily basis back when it was paired with 20128 on workings to/from Fiddlers Ferry PS. Coincidentally, one of the original cabsides from 168 now sits pride-of-place in my office. Can just...

What is this Sprinter doing on the WCML near Rugby?

It’s actually not as rare as you’d think. Here’s 150147 passing DIRFT in July last year on its way back to Newton Heath from Wolverton. There’s a regular Saturday morning path in the system for stuff returning to service after overhaul.

Carmont (near Stonehaven) derailment - 12 August 2020

Completely insignificant in the grand-scheme of things, considering the events of earlier today, but just a small correction: it was 158861 that was pranged at Hazel Grove, not 862. As always, thoughts go out to everyone caught up in this morning’s tragedy.

    Railway General Knowledge.

Close enough, Peter - it was 47216 but I’ll assume that was a typo ;) Was actually an early-1990s issue of Rail that reminded me! Over to you, Sir.

Sorry for the tardy response - house move and all that... Okay: described by some as Immingham’s ‘demon’ loco, what was the identity of the Class 47 which was said to be cursed, after a clairvoyant predicted its demise in an accident?

    Rosyth Dockyards?

That’d be 27043, along with a handful of DMU bodyshells as well. Open floor.

    WMTrains livery and station branding

Unless my eyes were deceiving me, 350404 is also now in LNWR colours. Just passed me heading south out of Manchester Piccadilly, destination unknown.

    High and low level stations

I guess you could add Warrington Bank Quay to the list as well. Obviously, the high-level platforms still exist; the low-level platforms used to serve the Widnes line and closed in the mid-1960s.
