Hi folks, any chance one of you lovely people could advise me of the unit number for: 9M14 17:09 York - Manchester Victoria on 11/09/2019, please? https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/Y01126/2019/09/11/advanced Thanks very much!

ECML closed PBO to KGX Aug Bank Holiday routing

Nothing "in the water", just the start of the biggest arts festival in Europe. And judging by LNER's Twitter feed, surprise surprise, it's been unmanaged chaos! https://twitter.com/LNER/status/1162265307609620481?s=19 https://twitter.com/LNER/status/1162342151197548545?s=19 This suggests to...

ScotRail HST Introduction - Updates & Discussion

RTT think that today's 1B54 15:54 Inverness - Edinburgh is an HST. Disappointed to report that it's a 170 (170415). Thankfully sparsely populated at least in the leading carriage albeit almost every seat in said carriage is reserved but many intending occupants have either not turned up or are...

You're UK rail boss. Next 20 years: money no object, planning laws relaxed. What would you do?

You're very welcome! Thank you for your contribution! :) If you're going to have HS2 at all, it's madness not to have it directly connect to HS1! Also, IMO, construction should start in the north and work its way southward, rather than the other way round. Also, (possibly now getting fully into...

You're UK rail boss. Next 20 years: money no object, planning laws relaxed. What would you do?

Let's not step outside our remit here! We're in charge of the railways, not the relocation of entire populations of countries or continents en masse! (Anyway, what if some or all of these people don't want to move?)

You're UK rail boss. Next 20 years: money no object, planning laws relaxed. What would you do?

Thank you for this - you make some very interesting points! Money no object (to avoid limiting people's imaginations and thus risking the discussion being considerably less interesting) for a specific, non-negotiable, fixed length of time (couldn't fit all that into the available thread title...

Should freight trains be held during peak hours?

I sincerely hope not! If anything, we need more freight on the railway, not less! And that's not out of any interest in loco spotting either! There's plenty of other types of freight to move and more could be added. It'd be great to see some expansion in car transport by rail, for example...

Your ideas for future uses of Class 91s and Mk4 coaches

Could/would MkIVs to CrossCountry with 68s (or whatever) and DVTs actually be a thing? If so and it let them double up some Voyagers, or even cascade some to their Brum - Stansted Airport route if that'd be possible, it sounds like a great idea.

'Available' as opposed to 'Available if Not Occupied'

They must be terribly nervous people in your neck of the woods! Round here, if a seat's reserved but not occupied, 99.9 times out of 100 it's getting sat on!

'Available' as opposed to 'Available if Not Occupied'

"Reserved unless unoccupied" might be better. Either way, you'd have to hope nobody pinched your seat if you went to the loo or the buffet!

Your ideas for future uses of Class 91s and Mk4 coaches

How about converting some MkIVs into beds and keeping a few 91s and DVTs to haul them (blunt end if you like) on sleeper services between Kings Cross and Edinburgh/Glasgow? I'd imagine they'd operate between Kings Cross and Low Fell (near Newcastle) and Edinburgh on the East Coast, and to...

You're UK rail boss. Next 20 years: money no object, planning laws relaxed. What would you do?

Fully agree with this! Unfortunately, I'm hopeless at maths so others will be able to understand the key parts of this better than me, but FWIW I'm very much behind the rest! :D

You're UK rail boss. Next 20 years: money no object, planning laws relaxed. What would you do?

Just the one that hit 163mph (or whatever it is) - the all-time UK record holder - and do that again (assuming the loco itself could actually do it now without just falling to bits). Otherwise, convert some MkIV coaches into sleepers, and keep some 91s and DVTs to haul them (blunt end if you...

You're UK rail boss. Next 20 years: money no object, planning laws relaxed. What would you do?

I thought so. It's a real pity we never got to experience the Class 91s st their genuine top whack, and that the same looks likely for the Pendolinos (Pendolini?). Indeed. As it is, we have carrots like Transpennine electrification and Manchester capacity expansion dangled and then snatched...
