Scotland's Railway - Potential Enhancement Options

Why is there always someone on here saying “x line can’t be reopened as there’s a bike path / housing / insert some perceived obstacle here in the way” Look at past reopenings. Borders, new alignment near the A720. Airdrie Bathgate, bike path realigned. The original railways when built were on...

ScotRail HST Introduction - Updates & Discussion

Indeed. The logo below made it onto the plaque for one of the bridges rebuilt as part of EGIP. The plaque was remade before installation.

    Scotrail Class 385 Discussion

Is it not enough capacity, or just not enough in the front coaches? My observations, admittedly from 8 months plus ago when it was still 7 coaches, was that the front ones heading into Glasgow / Edinburgh on E&G services were full and standing in the peaks from the stations closest to Edinburgh...

    Glasgow Subway new trains

It’s a new depot built for receiving and testing the trains and signalling as there’s no space in the existing depot to do that. I understand it is planned to be removed when the project is completed.

Sydney Light Rail extension - first day

Indeed. Incompatibility and NSW goes all the way back to to the 1850s.

Glasgow Queen Street refurbishment and remodelling

“...minor variations...” is an interesting way to put it! I think it’s been a good example of Network Rail, the Contractor (Balfour Beatty) and the unions working together to react to change. One example, originally the buildings on platform 2 couldn’t be demolished until the new staff...

    Edinburgh Tram developments

The people who messed it up last time have all moved on, indeed some of the team that replaced them and delivered the first phase are still involved. Secondly, it’s a different form of contract in place this time around. Not a fully bespoke, one project only lawyerfest that the first phase was...

    Reclining Seats on Planes.

You’re on a long haul flight. You know the person in front is going to recline. It’s not inconsiderate as it’s what the seats are designed to do. Stop bitching about it and sleep when you arrive. If travelling for business, the business should pay for seat further forward, or what’s the point...

Are any "bring back old lines" campaigns likely to succeed?

yes there was, but it got lost in the EGIP “reimagining” and then the Waverley to Queen Street via Cumbernauld service took over. As for Bo’ness, others have alluded to the practical difficulties, but do we really want to let the people of Bo’ness loose in the wider world?

    Scottish Electrification updates & discussion

Still looks horrible in the short / medium term with the new stone on top of the old, weathered stuff. Royal Terrace in Linlithgow looks ridiculous.

    Electrification over flat crossings

Burke Rd is complete, the level crossing at Glenhuntly Rd is in the planning stages prior to removal. Still two more tram/train level crossings at Glenferrie Road Kooyong and Riversdale Road Camberwell not yet planned to be removed. Painfully slow on a train over all those crossings, but as...

Flooding at Winchburgh (07/08): looks like a canal tunnel

Totally agree. Think about it. “We have no money to do maintenance works to keep the lines at a standard to run trains, as we’ve spent all the money maintaining pumps which only get used once every 5 years” sounds silly.

Glasgow Queen Street refurbishment and remodelling

Platform 2 was a 6 car platform, so it’s being extended to 7. So you’ll have 2 8 car platforms, but it’s not until 4&5 are done that you get 3 8 cars

    Scotrail Class 385 Discussion

Therein lies the rub. Caveats like that range from outright fabrication, to outright facts from people in the know that are not yet in the public domain. The latter so as to appear to be second/third etc hand info to maintain some sense of anonymity / deniability about being the “leaker”.

    Scotrail Class 385 Discussion

Sorry, didn't get the number, but the 385/0 on the 10:45 from Waverley to Queen Street this morning was very clean on the outside and had “new train smell” on the inside. I wonder how long that lasts in full service?

    Sydney Metro

What’s not to get? Sydney’s rail network traditionally had problems with delays on one line cascading to others due to the interoperable nature of the network. They’ve spent a lot of money over the past 20 years attempting to disentangle it. This is a new line to an area never served by rail...

Why are people opposed to HS2? (And other HS2 discussion)

Just the ones you hear about, because it sells newspapers (or in the modern parlance, generates clicks). Even though the parties responsible for successful projects try to trumpet them in the press, they’re not picked up or if they are, the stories get buried. Case in point. A recent Telecoms...

LNER Timetable change: should a footnote be provided when a train is extended ?

As above, some have it, some don’t. The company I work for takes it for the Glasgow office, but takes Victoria Day for the Edinburgh office. West Lothian schools take Victoria Day, except for Bathgate and Linlithgow Clusters who have Newlands and Marches days respectively. Very handy for...

Why are people opposed to HS2? (And other HS2 discussion)

So, to sum up the preceding 63 pages... One or two people (on this thread) think “HS2 bad”. Two or so pages of arguments, mostly quite reasonable, of why HS2 should be a good thing. The original one or two people come back on and say “I don’t believe any of that” then stick their fingers in...

How much of the Underground map have YOU covered (continued)?

Underground map, all. London Connections map. Only Broxbourne to Hertford East not done. It wasn’t on that map when I lived down there.
