Early colour photos of Mk2 carriages in maroon livery

All I get is a load about mathematical factors of the number 40. (Search using Duck Duck Go, or Google) Searching for maroon Mark 2 coaches gave lots of photos of preserved or model coaches.

    trivia oldest and newest together

Yes. It is a Class M7, push/pull fitted. I cannot decipher the entire numberplate, but it starts with 30xxx, which is correct for ex-LSWR locos. It is a different tank loco in the black & white picture. The loco on the far left looks like a Class S15 4-6-0 in both pictures.

Is tradition holding the UK back?

I think that the senior Civil Service structure needs to be reformed, particularly how and which staff are recruited. Time after time it seems to make a mess - railways, IT systems, Military equipment contracts, to name just a few.

The Social Railway - Don't InterCity operators have such responsibilities too? XC bosses in particular, I'm thinking of you.

Lea Green replaced - probably for political reasons - St. Helens Junction as an important stop between Liverpool & Manchester. St. Helens has a population of over 100,000 - and for a town of ts size, it has a relatively poor railway service. Newton Le Willows is a separate town, but dragged...

    trivia oldest and newest together

In 1980, Liverpool & Manchester loco "Lion" (built 1838 ?) was let out of museum and made some runs on the main line, including Southport to Bold Sidings (St. Helens), plus Eccles to Manchester Liverpool Road. It also ran in the Rainhill "parades", passing, amongst others , a HST. Also on the...

EMR Norwich - Liverpool - Class 170 problems

I think it was to avoid overloading on Grand National Day. Pairs of 3 car 170s have been working into Liverpool (usually midweek) for a few months, and all called at the booked stops, including South Parkway. For example, today (link will expire in a week)...

    City icons past and present?

Municipal bus operators. Now mostly disappeared. Their own distinctive liveries and types, and almost all far better than their "corporate" successors.

Severn Valley Diesel Gala 2024 16th-19th May

Please delete; got my gala dates mixed up. Edit : With so many locos expected to work, some of them are almost certain to do very little mileage.

As it stands, is it worth ordering HS2 stock?

I don't think yjey would ever need trains longer than 250m if they stopped wasting so much space on under-used 1st Class areasa. One 1st Class coach per train would be more than adequate for most services.

Progress on Avanti West Coast's 805/807s Hitachi AT300 sets

Liverpool / Edge Hill are just convenient routes for mileage accumulation running on electric power.

Artists impressions/mock-ups/etc that never came to fruition?

E.S. Cox's book "Locomotive Panorama" (Volumes 1 &2) contains drawings of several LMSR steam designs that were never built. Those included Fowler 4-6-2 and 2-8-2 (for freight), and Stanier's streamlined 4-6-4s.

How did railtours work in BR days?

Back in the 1950s, 1960s and until about the early 1970s, many railtours were hired by Rail Enthusiast societies (e.g. LCGB, RCTS, SLS), arranged via (District/Division) managements - usually those responsible for the originating station. Coaching stock was usually that which was spare at...

    Local radio stations

It is all down to accountants and advertising agencies. Commercial stations play what they think will get them the most advertising revenue - and that involves playing what the advertisers think "we" will want to listen to. And (apologies to the exceptions) - if many administrative / financial...

Beeching Cuts and the Big Four

A big worsening in BR finances was due to the ASLEF strike in 1955, which lasted for over 2 weeks. Many passengers - and, more importantly, freight users found they could "get by" without rail transport. Many deserted rail, never to return. Road freight transport boomed. The subsequent decline...

Delays caused by services with faulty toilets

In the past, trains with "toilet problems" would often make an extended stop at a station with toilets. Expecting passengers to wait an hour or more for the next train should be considered "unacceptable".

    Hillside crossover

Couldn't find this mentioned elsewhere, but for anyone who likes doing "rare" track or crosovers: Until Friday 5 April, Hunts Cross to Southport trains are terminating at Hillside, then reversing over the crossover south of Hillside station on their return to Liverpool & Hunts Cross.
