More dangerous lineside behaviour around Flying Scotsman

Frankly it baffles me... but equally I'm not in denial about quite how high the level of interest in 'normals' is. And the fact that the national media only seems to mention 'the' Flying Scotsman, 'the' Mallard or 'the' Tornado (sic x 3) when it comes to 'steam trains' obviously has a huge effect.

    What made you smile today?

It would make me very happy to go an entire day without hearing or reading that particular expression... ;) <D

I was wondering how coincidental this might be... ;)

Train hits power line brought down by light aircraft at Abergavenny

Railway interest forum: Road interest forum: Nautical interest forum: Aviation interest forum: All interest groups suffer from highly selective myopia. As has been said above, where does it end? ;)

    Unofficial motorway services

Bear in mind that, even if the shop isn't open 24 hours, many superstore garages offer 24 hour pay-at-pump petrol, if you only need a fill up. My suggestion is for the A1(M) and the big Tesco at Yaxley. It's 10 minutes or so off the main route, but I always prefer it to Peterborough Services.

    What made you smile today?

If you want to feel better and also do something constructive, do what I do. Pop the leaflet in an envelope addressed to the party office (on the leaflet) and put it in the post without a stamp. If enough people do it, the charges to the recipient for the unpaid postage will hopefully bankrupt...

Who would you like to make train passenger announcements?

I've always thought this should be on a loop on Underground train PAs... If you can afford to shop in M&S then I admit to a certain feeling of schadenfreude...

3rd Rail corrosion - Durrington on Sea

I don't think you need take a 'proper' camera. All you need to do is to take the pics from an angle where the Pandrol clips of the running rail bahind are visible through the holes, then post an enlarged, cropped version. I agree with duffield, at first I saw stuff flaking off, but then, no, I...

More dangerous lineside behaviour around Flying Scotsman

Repeatedly brings hands together swiftly and noisily in an accepted human way of demonstrating approval :p When I was young and stupid, I came to grief a couple of times on railways because I knew it all, I could look after myself and those in charge were just 'killjoys'. The resulting...

Where does the nickname 'Gricers' come from?

I think that's a case of a retrogressive acronym, in the same way that some people believe that chav is an acronym of council house and violent. It isn't - the word was around for decades before the alleged 'explanation'.

    Railway Lamp or Road Lamp?

It's a Southern Railway fogging handlamp, used by signalmen and other lineside staff, but it's missing the front glass and housing. I have two of them, but I have never seen one missing the front part like that before. (Each railway company and BR region had its own style of lamps) I hope you...

How does the 5, 9 or 10 car allocation work on LNER's new Azuma?

I'm wondering about this when they eventually run to Aberdeen. Will it be two five car units that split at Edinburgh or a full nine car throughout? If the former, it'll be like going back to the 1970s on the Hastings line ("Passengers for Frant, Wadhurst, Stonegate, Etchingham, Robertsbridge...

Who would you like to make train passenger announcements?

I'd volunteer: "The next station is... actually I'm not going to tell you. Tear you eyes away from your ^%&@ing phone for two minutes, look out of the *&$£ing window and take responsibility for your own journey. People never needed a running commentary for the first 170-odd years of passenger...

Where does the nickname 'Gricers' come from?

I prefer 'stoatface', as per the legendary site with photos of train spotters which was (rather regrettably) taken down a number of years ago.

More dangerous lineside behaviour around Flying Scotsman

If memory serves me correctly, platform yellow lines were first introduced at certain stations on the Western Region with the advent of the HSTs. Which is where I first saw them, in the late 1970s. When they were originally introduced it was absolutely nothing to do with open doors and...

GCR(N) vandalism causes thousands of pounds of damage

So what are they going to actually do about it, then? Other than taking the easy option of feeling better about themselves because they've complained on an internet forum? Which achieves... what, in real practical terms? By the way, as an old fart myself, I disagree with Alanko's ageist...

GCR(N) vandalism causes thousands of pounds of damage

One thing you've omitted to mention is that the vocal 'we're going to hell in a handcart/hang em and flog em' brigade always talks a good game... but never seems to do anything at all constructive to try and improve matters. That, of course, is far better left to somebody else...

GCR(N) vandalism causes thousands of pounds of damage

Unfortunately railway enthusiasts - whether they 'also pay' or not - are in the minority when it comes to those who visit preserved railways. Alas, this is a truism that so many of them continue to be in absolute denial about. There's a huge difference between 'works in progress and interesting...
