    A career as a signaller

No. You have two rostered Sundays but they are counted as overtime. So you either elect not to work it and you get no pay (and someone else will jump at doing t instead) or you work it (which most do ) and get paid 1.5 times your basic hourly rate. You work a 35hour week - whatever shift...

Sunday is 150% not 50% as the whole day is outside the week.

There isn't a shift allowance unless you are a relief signaller? You do get an extra 10% basic pay for any hours between 2200 and 0600 though. And Sundays are all overtime at 150%.

The break is from IST... if your LOM wants you to sit in a signal box then that is what you'll have to do. But you will definitely be 'booked off' for all of the Bank Holidays...

I wouldn't take it as a given that you will be at home... some LOM's may expect you to be at your signal box at least for a few hours each day. Most won't take this line but if yours does not much you can do about it - you are being paid after all... this would only apply to actual rostered days...

This! Yes, mostly RPS may be better but for some it will not. As others have said a decent independent pensions adviser may be worth speaking to. It could mean a difference of a few thousand by the time you retire... which would make an IFA fee of a few hundred very much worth it...

72hr maximum averaged across your roster rather than having to average 72hrs (which I know you meant but some non-signallers might completely misconstrue it and think they are about to become junior doctors!) I'm quite happy doing more than 60hrs up to 72hrs during a week, I like to think I am...

You'd be really unpopular with your colleagues if all the Sunday shifts were set aside for you!

    Non-Safety Critical Medicals

So don't hand your notice in until you have confirmation you have passed the medical and have a start date??

    Rail track engineer. Rail futures

.... yep... and where does it say there is a job at the end? Looks like they are simply a training provider????

They won't book you on signal school if you can't attend all the weeks - the course isn't doable by dipping in and out. You should declare the pre-booked holiday at the interview stage. Down to the LOM then whether they can work round things with either a delayed school start date and they find...

Recommendation for boots to wear while driving trains

Yep, Altberg definitely the best but pretty expensive - used them extensively as general patrol boots and also public order boots whilst in the police. Don't bother spending extra on the 'Aqua' versions - yes they might be a little more waterproof but the trade off is that they are...

Yes! Bear in mind that LROP might be the better payment to choose... otherwise for the 28th you only get 2hrs BH pay at the higher rate and no comp day ( 2hrs at lower rate plus a comp day off seems much better to me....)

Exactly, and I can't see how the unions are happy with this. The pay scales say that you are trained at a grade below your substantive grade... So for this particular advert say you apply and want to go to Barnham, a grade 6 box. You won't be able to go to any others as they are outside the 60...

Sorry but like many others I retired early from the police with years of experience in dynamic risk assessments and making critical decisions in emergency type situations. Clearly many of my skills were directly transferable to signalling. I took a slight pay cut for the period in which I was...

I get the apprenticeship thing but you are applying for a specific box - Barnham for example is a Grade 6 and I'm guessing the Three Bridges roles will be equivalent or possibly even higher. There is a big difference between what is effectively a Grade 2 salary and Grade 6 (or even Grade 5...
