Less than 50% of delay repay being claimed

One of my trips from Manchester to London developed a 1 hour delay en route. But I didn’t claim delay repay because I wasn’t in a rush and I enjoyed taking the slow scenic route around Birmingham.

Elizabeth Line 1st year operating figures

Liverpool Street Elizabeth Line station does smell damp. Myself and other people I know have noticed this. I find it hard to believe that people claim they can’t smell it.

    DB class 90 updates

How can diesel locos be more economical than electric?

Why is Wi-Fi limited and so poor?

Because you can’t plug a train into a fibre optic cable and starlink isn’t at full strength yet. The railway could build its own private wireless network to broadcast the signal from trackside to the train, but that would be expensive. So instead on board Wi-Fi relies on mobile phone...

    Commuting 'not coming back': Harper

Sounds like we need to slap a pantograph on these third rail trains and send them up north.

Progress on Avanti West Coast's 805/807s Hitachi AT300 sets

New trains are always welcome but these Class 800’s are becoming a plague! There’s too many of them. I wish more operators would order those excellent Stadler Flirts of the type Greater Anglia have.

Drivers departing safely using Platform Sceen Doors

Two ways. On the Elizabeth line and Jubilee line the trains have CCTV screens in the cabs which shows feeds from cameras on the platform. The second way is that the PED door system is integrated into the trains door system so if a door is not closed it will show as not closed in the cab.

    Escalators: why not wider?

Escalators wider than 1m do not exist. None of the manufacturers make them and since escalator users are supposed to hold the handrail it is not hard to see why since legally they would not be able to carry any more people than a 1m wide one. As others have suggested, getting specially made...

Avanti West Coast Rolling Stock Updates

So I was able to experience refurbished sets on on both legs of my return trip from London to Liverpool on Friday. It is definitely an improvement albeit a light touch one. The new seats in standard are comfortable and having a socket at each seat will be welcomed by passengers. I was sat in...

Avanti West Coast Rolling Stock Updates

Well, I’ve seen a lot of train refurbs where the ceilings, lighting and wall panels are changed.

Well, I must say I was expecting a little bit more. But the new seats plug sockets are a welcome addition.

    Trivia: Common railway related fallacies

Trains are usually late or delayed. Japanese or German management would be able to get the trains to run on time within a few months. Hs2 is being built so people can get from London to Birmingham 20 mins faster. Leaves on the line is nothing but a poor excuse. Train drivers get paid £5000 an...

Why do Network Rail still use some imperial measurements?

Actually all of the navigation and control calculations for the Apollo programme were done in metric. The results were then converted to imperial units which were displayed to the engineers and astronauts.

English City Regions to get £6.9 billion for transport funding

The train trams will be used to expand the network to places it does not currently serve over network rail infrastructure. Not to replace the existing fleet.

Covid-19 to have a permanent downward effect on commuting patterns with more partial working from home?

I have some very mixed feelings regarding working from home. I work in a specialised design profession that relies heavily on close collaboration and I do feel that working from home has made certain tasks more difficult. Some things are just easier when you are in the same room as the other...

How will new travel patterns affect the Railway?

City centres will adapt and become more like suburbs. Shopping Areas will reduce in size but there will still be a need for some shops. Vacant Office buildings and shops will be redeveloped into residential buildings. But because city centre land prices will fall and more people will be working...

How will new travel patterns affect the Railway?

Agreed. If electric vehicles are perceived as green and are cheaper to operate than petrol cars then people may very well use them more often. However when driverless cars become a thing it will become common to simply order a car using an app and it will pick you up and take you to your...

How will new travel patterns affect the Railway?

I think you have it spot on. As much as I hate to say it the role of the railway will decline from now on since so many office workers have realised they prefer not commuting. I agree that we will see a dramatic reduction in staffing and a reduction in frequencies. I do not think that we will...

Why are people opposed to HS2? (And other HS2 discussion)

The Telegraph is reporting that a consensus has been formed within the government regarding the direction in which to take HS2. Although the details are quite vague, it is claimed that the London to Birmingham leg will be cancelled or seriously curtailed. In it's place a number of smaller...
