    CrossCountry HST Diagrams

Thinking of doing an out-and-back to Plymouth on Saturday 12th August. I can see there is an overtime strike that day ... is that likely to effect the usage of an HST on these diagrams? Cheers

Carlisle to Glasgow Engineering Work (27th May)

I've just booked a ticket for a Crewe to Glasgow train on 27th May and have just noticed it will go via the G&SW north of Carlisle, stopping at Kilmarnock. I haven't been interested in railways as a hobby for over twenty years, so I've no idea how these things happen nowadays ... but would my...

    What train encapulates your childhood?

Class 310 EMU round my way. Always loved the 303 units round Glasgow in the orange Strathclyde livery too.

Your favourite loco(s) aka Your Machine.

37025 ... large logo, split box 37, with ploughs and a Scottie dog ... ya can't beat it

TRIVIA - Things you saw travelling on BR that you don't see today

Casey Jones Burgers in polystyrene containers (loved them) Max Pax trollies Cross Country Grill in the MKI buffet with orange seats Walking into TOPS offices to use their machines to see where loco's were or what was booked onto a certain train (I actually knew some of the code to put in when I...

Evocative railway sounds - what 'tingles your spine' ?

The sound of a roarer hammering over Shap whilst in the comfort of a Mk1 or Mk2 compo with windows open in the dark.

If you could travel back in time, what service would you like to travel on?

Did they sell Red Bull back in 1879? 😉

If you fell out of love with the rail scene in the past, what got you back?

I fell out of love with railways back in 1997 and I've never got it back - I haven't done anything remotely enthusiast like since then. I only come on here to reminisce and to see what's going on these days. In my eyes, it's a case of no diesel or electric loco hauled trains ... no point. I...

Waiting in the cold at Euston

I can tell you there most likely wasn't a fault ... how? because they do it all the time! The amount of times I go down to the platform at Euston and you are left standing there waiting whilst the crowd gets bigger, and then when the doors do finally open (usually about a minute or two before...

Locos working from various depots under BR

Was the several months away simply because it took it that long to get there and back? :D

Train Travel in Thailand and Vietnam

I travelled from Hanoi to Nha Trang by sleeper train in 2007, which took 30 hours, and was a fantastic experience. No doubt it's more expensive now, but we paid £15 each for the first class sleeper :o) Can't recommend it enough!

Idea for non-stop Scotland to London

I'm preeeetty sure he was joking :)

The tightest connection you have ever made at a train station

I never actually made the connection, but it's quite a funny story anyway ... When I was bashing back in about 1990, I arrived at New Street and had literally about a minute to run up to the concourse/bridge and get down to another platform for a Scotland bound service. I was doing okay...

Best food options near (but not in) stations

I usually grab a Burger King on my way back from Euston, and I feel guilty enough eating that on the train. I could never do a curry.

    Night trains in bygone eras

Brilliant - that's the first time I've ever heard of an overnight running on that route :)

    Memorable run on ECML 1987

I still remember my first ever trip on the ECML. I was nine, it was 1986, and we hadn't long taken up trainspotting. We arrived at Kings Cross for the overnight to Edinburgh which was 47 hauled, and the train was packed. We settled down in our seat and the old man went down the front to see...

    Accommodation suggestions and reviews

I used to ALWAYS do overnight trains unless it was absolutely necessary. So when I travelled to Ireland, I was forced to stay in B&B's. Most were rather nice, but I do remember staying in an absolute hovel in Limerick one night - it felt that dirty I slept in my clothes and refused to have a...

    1980's Nuneaton Drags

I can't answer your first question, but in my experience, there were far more 58's used than 56's, but I'm talking late 80's.

Single Container Wagon at Milton Keynes Today

I hope they move it soon. Otherwise the Afghans inside may suffocate.
