Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

I was onboard this morning and the train was not significantly busier than normal by Haslemere. I can’t see how loading can delay the train by 11 mins between Petersfield and Guildford. At Haslemere the dwell was short and many more than usual boarded

Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

I always thought the 444s were 360S/32F, meaning cap. on the 444s is a bit greater. Can't imagine cap. on the 442s is greater than on the refurbished 444 with the guards van still in place etc.?

Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

The 0615 service is also significantly fuller than the 0643 service, probably because of it’s faster advertised journey time, south of Haslemere. Moving a 442 set onto the 06:15 would mean fewer seats and more overcrowding so I would have thought likely longer dwell times

Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

Pretty sure there are problems both at Earlsfield and Waterloo, with the former occurring immediately after the 9B90 442 service passed Earlsfield. This suggests that the 442 ‘potentially’ caused the track circuit failure in Earlsfield.

Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

Travelling on 1P16 this morning and a queue of trains has formed from Earlsfield back to Wimbledon. Appears that the troublesome signal has had a change of aspect again?

Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

Thanks for this - Is it possible for you to provide a complete list of the morning and evening peak formations, please? i.e. arriving into Waterloo between 07:30 and 09:00 and departing on the return between 16:30 and 19:00

Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

Interesting, thanks for this. Any idea if the 444s which the 442s are replacing will be cascaded onto current Portsmouth Direct 450 diagrams? If so, is it known which services they are booked for?

    SWR new services

It appears that 1P16 is being delayed on almost a daily basis due to a tight pathing through Havant. A Portsmouth to Littlehampton service departs Havant just 2 minutes before 1P16 which leads to a delay almost daily which leads to conflict further upstream as the service gets to Guildford and...

    SWR new services

Doesn’t look like it can be to do with low adhesion season as it is the only train in the morning peak to have had this impromptu journey time extension. Must either be to do with the 442s or simply because SWR couldn’t meet the old journey time

    SWR new services

Does anyone have any idea why the 1P16 has had a further 2 mins added between Woking and Waterloo - journey time now of 32 minutes compared with 28 pre the timetable change in May. Is it a pathing issue with a new service?

Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

Does anyone have any update on how long the 442s are expected to remain out of service for? Any news on progress with this electrical interference issue?

    SWR new services

Would have thought it will be difficult for SWR to wet lease different rolling stock due to route clearance and driver training issues? Regarding loco hauled stock, presumably these would need to be diesel as I don’t think there are any third rail locos? It would also reduce capacity quite...

    SWR new services

Where is the stock planned to come from for all these additional services - seems that stock is already extremely stretched by the current timetable and having to operate without the 442s. In addition the franchise feels understaffed altogether. There have been a very high number of...

    SWR new services

Are there any plans to reduce the number of Godalming calls on the Portsmouth Direct Fasts and Semis? In the evenings, Godalming calls have exacerbated the overcrowding on the Fast services and the Slows feel under-utilised by comparison. Appreciate that removing the Godalming call on the...

Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

What is the seating capacity of a refurbished 10-442 compared with a refurbished 10-444 - 1P16 felt very full this morning compared with last week

Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

Does that mean 2 drivers will still be a requirement on all services?

Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

Problem is that any delay on Woking junction has significant consequences for the peak. A delay to 9B88 delays 1B90, which then causes a knock-on delay for 1P16 first and Woking junction and secondly at Surbiton, where 2F86 plugs the gap between 1B90 and 1P16

Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

Apologies for drifting rather off topic. Is there any new info regarding the introduction of the 442 on the Direct? SWR have told me it should be in the next 7 days, not that I believe it

Would it be possible to have faster services on the London Waterloo - Portsmouth route?

Agreed it does, but if there were to be a slight retiming of the service, say 2 mins earlier from Waterloo, and running via Woking it could easily clear Guildford before the GWR North Downs service crossing Shawford Junction meaning increased capacity and reduced journey time for those south of...

Would it be possible to have faster services on the London Waterloo - Portsmouth route?

In all fairness, Haslemere does have very high passenger numbers for a town of it’s size (1.8m recorded in 17/18) which is significantly larger than Petersfield and Godalming at 1.4m each. There also is a very high proportion of season ticket holders making it justifiable to have a non-stop up...
