Not sure which train this it but a preacher has gotten a hold of the PA. Unlocked guard panel I presume? Description: A video of the PA of a South Western Railway class 444 being used by a religious preacher. Source: TikTok

    XC Voyager Refurbishment

In Modern Railways January 2024. Beacon Rail have gone out to tender for XC Voyager refurbishment with 3 companies interested in the work (Alstom probably one of them). Also mentions Beacon Rail considering batteries for the voyagers but ruled out on cost. Not much other detail, but some good...

    Chiltern electrification alternatives being studied...

Rail Business UK - Chiltern Electrification Alternatives Studied So electrification is currently a no... hydrogen has been shown to be too expensive to operate abroad and batteries need somewhere to charge from. So how long till some electrification is finally accepted?

What stock could Grand Union use for Cardiff to London?

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/grand-union-tries-again-for-cardiff-to-london-open-access.231444/ Would be a good route for battery trains, Trainline makes the distance as 55 miles roughly each way between Carmarthen and Cardiff Central, 110 miles on battery is...

    "Not enough 810s"

Not sure where this is from, there are 33 810s and 31 222+180s with the 810s having higher capacity, if they were short of 810s it would make far more sense to add a couple on to the order than to have a second fleet of 2 or 3 units.

Did GA make the right choice?

The Flirts almost definitely would have won anyway due to basically the only regional bimode train, I do wonder about the Bombardiers whether GA had made the right choice, skipping the procurement model gives bad value for money and pre-covid GA's finances weren't particularly great.

    New trains for Northern

From this thread. TLDR; Northern have said they are planning more new trains in this, more specifically 331s. They say they are doing it for fleet standardisation, the other EMU fleets are 333s, 323s and 319s (soon to be replaced by 323s though). 323s seem unlikely, they decided to take on...

55 5 car 80x could be released according to Modern Railways

I have my doubts about this. GWR's 800s are tied up in the IEP contract so cannot be easily released, only the 802s possibly could but I still heavily doubt they will go. LNER have 22 5 car units all tied up in the IEP deal which makes them hard to release, they will sooner get rid of the few...

    Has EMR ordered enough 810s?

[referring to Virgin XC not ordering enough voyagers for the demand today] Class 222: 4 (4 cars) + 17 (5 cars) + 6 (7 cars) = 27 units Class 180: 4 units 27 + 4 = 31 units, 33 810s have been ordered. The 810s are only replacing the 180s and 222s, the HSTs are being replaced by the 180s and the...

How would you use electric trains on Harrow-On-The-Hill to Amersham?

Split from this thread, how would you use electric trains on this section which both Chiltern and London Underground run on? Difficult but not impossible, it will depend on how they view the use of dual voltage or bimodes. I believe this section is 750v (it got upped from 630v as part of the 4...

GWR should use HST 'Castle Class' sets on Brighton/Portsmouth - Cardiff services

The DA also suggested a refurb of the turbos with 2 + 2 seating, a turbo with the first class of 166205 throughout would be nice.

New Stadler Trains for Tyne and Wear Metro

Exactly as the title says, Stadler are making 42 new trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-england-tyne-51277602

Should Scotrail have obtained some FLIRTs?

170 were a little short but HSTs aren't the correct solution on my opinion, the best would be flirts.

Do GWR 800/802s decouple in service and should sets be extended to 9 cars?

The title says it all, do they decouple in service like the WCML voyagers. If not then why did the DfT (or whoever) order 5 car units instead of 9 car? If I remember correctly 802s decouple at Plymouth but 9 cars still run past Plymouth. Still no point for the 5 car 800s though. As lots don't...

Should all of the class 185s go to another operators/other operators?

The class 185s aren't lightweight and are very powerful, would they be better positioned elsewhere than there current planned services on TPE? Maybe they would be better elsewhere like GWR or Scotrail or other operators which operate hills sections with older DMUs. The class 185s seem to now...

    Chiltern Business Zone upgrades

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/chiltern-overcrowding.195985/page-2 Chiltern seem to make it hard to get into Business Zone, unless you want to pay on the day there isn't an easy way I've found to book it.

Possible solutions for Chiltern's stock shortages?

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/chiltern-overcrowding.195985/ Chiltern can't get any off lease stock, there isn't any and the 185s don't seem to be leaving too quickly. They are at the end of their franchise and won't invest any more, the best thing is new...

What is the intended lifespan of the voyagers?

I was wondering how long the voyagers were designed to last, XC units seem to be on there last legs with XC not maintaining them very well and the Virgin ones are getting replaced. As these were DEMUs do they have a shorter lifespan than the pendolino EMUs as they thought there would be more...

    Chiltern new trains?

Chiltern's franchise is ending in a year (and a bit) time and I think they will want to replace the 165s. They could cascade 168s onto these routes and replace the 168s, but what with? Or could they decide to replace the entire fleet? Chiltern have the opportunity to think relatively large...
