    A career as a signaller

Cut off date is 4th November on Saturday, so you should get 1 weeks training pay.

You can add your Sundays, bank holidays (if opting for pay), nightshift allowance and any overtime on top as well. Grade 1 pay until you complete signal school and pass out at your location. (Unless it's changed) There was someone on my course from the Navy who took to signalling like a duck...

    A career as a signaller

I received an email from onboarding telling me my start date, the name and telephone number of the LOM and the address I was to report, along with the time when I first started. Surprised you never got anything.

New Car Tyres - Cuts etc

False advertising, you can't claim a tyre is new because it came off a 12 month old "new" car. I got my tyres replaced a few thousand miles ago and they look cleaner than these.

    A career as a signaller

Everyone's different when it comes to working nights. Personally I prefer working the 12 hour night shift, roads aren't too bad coming into work and practically empty on the commute back home. Also the amount of trains you signal at least in my area is quieter through the night, less work to...

    A career as a signaller

I was one of the last groups to do the 12 weeks and 3 assessments. They managed to cut some unnecessary content out the course cutting it down to 10 weeks and 2 assessments.

November strike action on National Rail suspended - impact on next week's service

All strike action now suspended I've been informed.

    A career as a signaller

You'll be on training salary (grade 1) anyways for the duration of signal school and until you're signed out in your box once you've learned it. Which you'll be looking at 3+ months anyways factoring in time spend at signal school and learning your location. You'll earn more as a grade 1...

    £2200 every 4 weeks on a 12hr roster.

    A career as a signaller

Embarrassing mistake to make but happens. I usually leave the box with 100% battery now. To add to stuff I keep; - Glasses wipes (don't want smudged up glasses) - Alcohol wipes (habit from covid days) - Ibuprofen incase of a sudden migraine

USB phone charger is always kept in my locker now. Have forgotten a few times on a nightshift. Nothing worse than your phone dying (when reading the rule books in PDF format on the RSSB website of course)

Berlin Brandenburg Airport opens after being nine years late.

For a multi billion pound airport I was shocked when I got to the gate to find enough seating for no more than 12 people. I think they forgot that a 737-800 can hold over 180 people.

    ASLEF Ballot Results

Brilliant, a similar turnout to us Network Rail folk. Looking forward to the general public blaming signallers for this one!

Best mobile phone signal for working on the Railways

I left 3 last year after being a long term customer. After travelling around the UK and staying in various places I soon realised how bad they were!

    A career as a signaller

Line wasn't busy enough to justify working nights anymore. And to meet the new 60 hour limit they just done away with night shifts all together.

BBC reporting that Agency staff could cover strikes under law change

These "agency workers" better get themselves off to signal school this week then, once they've completed the 10 weeks training and the exams & observations required to pass. Should just be in time for the strike... oh wait.

    A career as a signaller

A common role signallers move onto is a MOM (Mobile Operations Manager) most are generally grade 7, some grade 6. Plenty of roles to move on to, I know of signallers moving on to become a LOM (Local Operations Manager) and even safety briefer for the development days we have to do. Plenty of...

    A career as a signaller

This will impact all signallers. I already know of an area that has lost it's nightshifts due to the 60 hour mandate. The job cuts are mainly aimed at maintenance, not signallers. Highly unlikely you'd be out of a job as a fully trained G7 signaller, 18 months is plenty of time to apply and...

Rail industry preparing for national strikes

And what about the mental health of the workers, such as maintenance staff who's jobs are at risk of being chopped and losing their lively hoods? Or should we only care about the publics mental health, turn up for duty and take no action to please the general public. The rail union (RMT) is only...
