Glasgow Queen Street refurbishment and remodelling

Why does that happen, by the way? I’ve never understood late platform announcements (and changes). Surely the decisions aren’t being made in a mad rush?

    Lothian Buses and ECB Discussion

I’m not really liking the new liveries generally — especially Airlink with its retro lines, but for me the multitude of logos is the real killer. It didn’t look any more professional in that old photo. Hopefully they’ll use it purely to differentiate different fleets and we won’t start to see...

    Lothian Buses and ECB Discussion

https://www.donaldstirling.me.uk/LothianBuses/Liveries-and-stuff/Lothian-overall-adverts-and-li/i-ffmjnnf/A I’m assuming this special livery is just a one off and that the Lothian Motorcoaches / Airlink font isn’t going to replace the main Lothian logo, but nonetheless, this one bus has two...

    Lothian Buses and ECB Discussion

It's not an oversight, it's just not implemented yet. Their website says the ability to buy other [paper] ticket types using contactless is coming with a future update. At that point, I think Lothian will be one of the first bus operators in the UK to offer both Pay As You Go with capping *and*...

Expansions for Scotland's rail network proposed

Battery tech has been slow at improving, but it too will evolve. Today we can only power small planes for short flights. But 30 years, as an arbitrary time period, is a very long time in tech. I wouldn't be throwing my arms up in the air claiming "it's not possible". Where there's a need, and a...

Expansions for Scotland's rail network proposed

Remember that aircraft propulsion technology isn’t going to stand still. In the coming decades we can expect better fuel efficiency and increased use of battery power. We’ll see hybrid aircraft in a similar fashion to today’s hybrid cars.

    Edinburgh Tram developments

Yes, but I believe the minimum amount for card payments is still above the cost of a single ticket (in the city). If there is no pay as you go and I must actually buy a ticket, they could at least let me buy a single with a card. I’m still waiting, highly impatiently, for Edinburgh to catch-up.

    Edinburgh Tram developments

It’s not a great excuse for a transport provider; presumably better deals are available. Buses all over the country take contactless. Buses and trams in London only take contactless and Oyster now, with cash no-longer being accepted. They’ve actually taken the tram ticket machines out of action...

Possible plans for Edinburgh Waverley station?

I reckon that’s true for the near future, but if 8 coaches is the realistic limit on the E&G via Falkirk then 4tph on that route specifically will eventually be inadequate. Then you need the Almond Chord to get to 6tph for example. Then in 20 years time that might be insufficient, etc. As city...

Possible plans for Edinburgh Waverley station?

I see, yeah. If the ultimate aim is to increase capacity into Edinburgh, and that eventually boils down to lines, and then perhaps platforms (as a consequence?), then tunnels have to be seriously considered at that point, I’d think. Despite the cost, it may (possibly) be the cleanest and most...

Possible plans for Edinburgh Waverley station?

Tunnelling is expensive, but we have some invaluable infrastructure because we tunnelled. The technical aspects might make it far too difficult to add platforms to Waverley, and if that’s the way it pans out, then so be it. But we should aim for the best solution we can get, not the cheapest.

Possible plans for Edinburgh Waverley station?

Yeah, so the question is, if more platforms are needed, where should they go? I’d still argue, at the moment anyway, that putting them underneath Waverley instead of a new station would be more convenient for most. It’s in the city centre, with the bus station nearby for non-local services, and...

Possible plans for Edinburgh Waverley station?

I’d posit that a new, separate HS station is not desirable. It’s far more user friendly to be able to group transport nodes together — that’s why we build interchanges where possible. Out-of-station transfers are a pain, especially as the distance increases. The only reason we’d end up with a...

Possible plans for Edinburgh Waverley station?

Can you imagine the finishing being left like that at any London terminus? I don’t understand why that’s deemed acceptable.

Expansions for Scotland's rail network proposed

Haha, true. I do agree, actually. I'd say it would be almost impossible politically and financially to force the creation of one primary Scottish international airport. Besides, right now Edinburgh and Glasgow compete and that can't be a bad thing. The only disadvantage that I can see is that...

Expansions for Scotland's rail network proposed

The London example is a bad comparison, because those airports are the primary airports for the entire south of England. Moreover, Heathrow, and to an extent Gatwick, are the primary international hubs for the entire UK. A better comparison would be Ireland with Dublin being their primary large...

    Lothian Buses and ECB Discussion

Yeah, I see what you’re saying, but I’m not so interested in the subtle design differences between models (although the more subtle, the better). I don’t agree with newer vehicles having different liveries though — the age or quality of the vehicle isn’t relevant when it comes to figuring out if...

    Lothian Buses and ECB Discussion

It sounds like the politics of TfE have contributed to today's mess, then. The potential wider scope of TfE aside, it should at the very least be ensuring integration, and that means branding as well as ticketing, and that in turn means consistent branding across the network. I understand the...

    Lothian Buses and ECB Discussion

Hi, newbie here. I'm from Edinburgh originally but I live in Greater London now. I'm interested in things like transport design, brand identity and usability, and so this seemed like a good opportunity to ask a question. Despite Lothian's successes, there are a few things that drive me nuts, one...
