Northern re-records 34 station name announcements with local pronunciation

Late to this party, but I really miss the announcements when the Kirkby branch was extended to HBL. (Standard female announcer) This is the Northern service to... (Male announcer who sounds like he's recorded via a tin can) ... 'EDBOL' LAIN Always made me and my wife chuckle. I had it as...

    Todmorden viaduct

Admittedly it has been a while since I was on the platform at Tod - it was probably around two weeks ago I spotted it. Perhaps the TSR has been removed. I suppose the broader point is that the viaduct is looking a bit lumpy. I had assumed the two were related.

    Todmorden viaduct

There is a relatively new (to me) speed restriction in the eastbound direction, which is presumably mirrored in the westbound as well. The viaduct has a quite noticeable dip on the far side from the station, and it appears to have worsened in the last year. That seems to explain the speed...

Manchester Victoria to Wigan North Western diagram

Electric traction would make a lot of sense. But who wants to pay the lease for an expensive EMU if there are cheap DMUs available. Northern will have to bite the bullet on some EMUs eventually, once Stalybridge to Wigan via Westhoughton is electrified.

    Castleton South Junction Renewal

There is time built in at Victoria to make up time, but as you say no such luck in the Yorkshire direction.

Manchester Victoria to Wigan North Western diagram

There's a mad Northern service running directly between Manchester Vic and Wigan NW once-hourly via Lowton Junction. It doesn't stop at intermediate stops, and it's always empty when I see it. Today it consisted of a 4 carriage 156. Meanwhile Blackburn to Rochdale is formed of a single 150...

    Castleton South Junction Renewal

I was on the M62 the other day driving under it and I thought it seemed to have cracks in it. I have now noticed there is a 20mph speed restriction over it. Is there a noted issue and any plan for remediation? The route is important during the TPE upgrade process, so I'd have hoped it will get...

    Route planning into SFD

Hi all, Around a year ago I opened a thread regarding a dispute I had with Northern over a ticket from SMB (Smithy Bridge) to Manchester CTLZ (Manchester Central Zone) and stopping short at SFD (Salford Central) on a flexi season ticket. A forum member kindly advised that it was a valid route...

Well, looks like I need to rename the thread. Thank you everybody so much for your help, you've made my week a lot brighter. Have a great weekend!

Paid correct fare, to incorrect station

Morning all, I've managed to get into a little dispute with Northern, relating to an alleged overtravel on my commute from Smithy Bridge to Salford Central. I used to travel to Victoria on a Manchester Central Zone flexi ticket, but on a whim on a return trip one evening decided to see if the...

Compensation prospects - Taxi due to Journey Abandonment

Hi all, thank you in advance for any views. This is a 'prospective dispute', facts below. Travelling via Manchester Victoria to Liverpool Lime Street. Two legged journey, first one with Northern via Rochdale. Second leg on a TPE service arriving at Lime Street for 2pm, wedding starting at 3pm...

How early do you need to arrive at a station where there are level crossings

Implicit therein is that where there is through traffic they will not be appropriate. The real answer is that level crossings on mainline should have been phased out years ago.

How early do you need to arrive at a station where there are level crossings

Pedestrian access to Dual Carriageways and Motorways is generally restricted. I would say that there is no obvious safety reason to restrict pedestrian crossings on rural branch line stations where there is no through traffic.

I'll be on 9E06 between Victoria and Newcastle on Monday. Can I assume this is also booked as Nova 1?

New trains for East Midlands Franchise

The same applies to Reading iirc if Voyagers end up doubling up on the Bournemouth route. Man Picc will also end up losing the ability to double up units terminating in some bay platforms. Isn't the reality that an upgraded XC franchise will by necessity require some station...

Porterbrook Cl.769 'Flex' trains from 319s, initially for Northern

Clearly the TOC should clearly be spending more money on alternative means of communication with the 0.1% of bike riders who don't use WhatsApp...

Porterbrook Cl.769 'Flex' trains from 319s, initially for Northern

I'll write another letter to the DFT. They're bound to reply to me any day now! ;) *hem* back on topic...any news from our dear friends at the Northern Railway Company on this subject? If they don't appear, will this scupper the ability of the people of Wigan to get to work?
