Who can edit Customer Information Screens?

The challenge with this statement is that is it fundamentally two different train services. For example, in the instances where there is no guard for the middle portion of a journey, the unit may terminate and then become a Class 5, but it cannot restart as the original headcode on the same...

RIP Great western 125mph.... (IETs to have speed limiter automatically set)

You can’t just roll out new software onto a train overnight without the necessary testing and engineering change procedures being followed. Implementing software on a shore-side management system to utilise existing data-feeds is a much quicker process and a provides a real time reporting tool...

RIP Great western 125mph.... (IETs to have speed limiter automatically set)

As ever on this forum, I would implore members to take stock of their comments before posting. There have been several incidents of 80x units over-speeding at quite a number of TOCs. For those who have never driven one, or indeed sat in the second man's seat, the driving position and shape of...

    What makes a good livery?

Livery and wider brand assets were designed by DG Design. A very versatile brand, despite being complex. Indeed, so popular I recall seeing a photo about a year ago and for a brief second thinking “where near Manchester is that” before realising it was actually different rolling stock and in...

Order of doing things when joining/dividing trains

Whilst I’m not an expert in the “generic” approach to be taken, it is certainly mandated by some operators as to how it should specifically be carried out. Take a look on the RAIB website for the report on the Caledonian Sleeper service that went sailing through Edinburgh in 2019 with only a...

    Red hand lamps/batons

I fully understand what both signals mean. I was explicitly highlighting that the earlier post, which stated that the main aspect being red didn’t mean stop, was wrong, as it misunderstood the relationship between the main aspect and PL.

    Red hand lamps/batons

The question was raised about hand lamps, but I think we could broaden the discussion to “signals”, thus including flags and of course, static reflective signs.

    Red hand lamps/batons

If there is a main aspect signal and a position light together, as long as one of them is in the off position, you have not passed a signal at danger. Your argument is void. Find another example where red does not mean stop.

    Red hand lamps/batons

Not sure I agree with this statement. A Position Light showing a proceed aspect (two whites at a diagonal) authorises the driver to proceed, the main aspect to which it accompanies is not relevant. It is not 'authorising' the passing of a danger aspect, whether at caution or not.

TPE Mark 5A coaching stock progress

No. It's the coach <> locomotive data connection.

TPE Mark 5A coaching stock progress

Plenty of mods taking place on the sets as they cycle through Wolverton, not least the replacement of the Harting Plug with something a bit tougher. Should be some decent improvements when they return both from a customer experience and reliability perspective.

    Lumo 803 fault?

Unless it was a spurious 'door open in traffic' alarm and upon inspection the door was confirmed as not being open. Wouldn't be the first time on an 80x.

    Batley Bump

“Marsden Flick” is my affectionate term for the crossover east of Marsden station. The tail end of a 185 can be interesting if you have a driver in a hurry - most will wait until the rest of the train is over the points before taking power for an earlier speed increase, but not all!

    Detailed station PIS screens

Depends entirely on the application. When I’m looking at specify technology for a station, if it’s exposed to the elements and has the potential for sun glare, you just can’t beat an LED full matrix screen. Under canopies, I’m a massive advocate of anti-glare coated portrait TFTs.

Question: What is the max speed in which a train can pass a station?

The problem is, it's never that simple. I can give at least three examples that highlight why "TOCs doing whatever they want in isolation" isn't the problem: Platform markings are usually driven by risk assessments conducted in response to rolling stock - example: a new type of rolling stock...

    Detailed station PIS screens

I believe these are a product from a company called Blackbox. The new screen at Castleford is not the same as this and was manufactured by Infotec, same as the CIS at all TPE stations. EDIT: I didn't look clearly enough at the photos. The Thameslink screens are Infotec (the same as TPE stations...

    Batley Bump

"Batley Bump" has to be eliminated in order to deliver the TRU line speeds. Similarly, the new proposed fast lines and associated track work on the slows may see the end of the TPE company speed restriction over Heaton Lodge Junction.

Question: What is the max speed in which a train can pass a station?

There is no upper speed limit imposed as a blanket for all stations. As other posters have identified, there are a number of reasons that could cause a train to pass a platform at a lower speed than the theoretical maximum line speed, but these would typically be for adverse circumstances, i.e...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates
