    Semaphore signalling

Was this NJ9 at Norton Junction? I understand it was then connected to a ROC at Saltley in Birmingham, but has now been removed and replaced with an ILS Dorman signal with a position 4 junction indicator for the route towards Bristol or Gloucester. I assume this was done to do away with Norton...

Heart of Wales Line closed until August 3rd

There was talk of closing this line back in the eighties. British Rail always seem to want it closed, But too much opposition and it survived due to the communities it serves. So the repair to the bridge is now essential. I believe it survived as it is a quick route also to Shrewsbury.

Where can CrossCountry trains reach 125mph?

If you travel south of Bromsgrove they have replaced a lot of the signal heads on to the existing posts with 4 aspect led heads. I know that some have also been replaced in Gloucester, so maybe they are getting ready to increase the linespeed on that line, but probably not to 125mph though.

Stations with just one platform...that could really do with two

I would say Melksham, Down by Wesbury as it would get a better service, but an additional line needs to be laid first though.

    Trivia - all semaphore routes.

Update on this. Had now noticed some signals, two at Norton junction and two others have been replaced with colour led ones. NJ9 is of the Dorman type with a position 4 junction indicator for the Cheltenham line. There was two on a small gantry with the distant worked from Gloucester. Signal...

Trivia: Most impressive stretch of line on the network?

What about the beautiful entrance into Liverpool lime street with the impressive cutting that must have cost a packet and has very high walls to the sides and lastly the lovely job network rail did at relaying tracks, making it even more pleasurable entering into a platform.

What was the first "big" supermarket to open in your local area?

The first large store in Gloucester, was a big Sainsburys followed by their Homebase store built on an old car dealers in Westgate in the 1980's. It was moved to the docks and the Homebase moved to eastern avenue. The old Homebase is now a Dunelm store and Carphone warehouse, which has been...

    Facing point lock conundrum

In some of the old signalling plans I have. The points are shown on some, that is, that the locks stand either in or out in the normal lever position. Looks like it was done like by whoever designed the systems. Most of the plans I have are from the line that ran from Andoversford to Cirencester...

Alphabetical displays in theatre route indicators.

Sounds like they are old and out of date now, probably dating from the 1930's when signalling consisted of those old mini lever panels like they had in Bristol and Newport.

Alphabetical displays in theatre route indicators.

What were these?. Never seen them on signals. They do however have double sided stencil type used as platform ' OFF' CD' and RA indicators. The only one I know about is on platform 1 at Cheltenham Spa.

What was the first "big" supermarket to open in your local area?

I remember a Kwik Save in Lydney where I lived at the time. The old store was in an old red and white bus Depo and was pulled down, They then built a nice yellow brick new Kwik Save and 18 months later Somerfield took it over and it was not the same. some years later it was changed to a Harry...

Alphabetical displays in theatre route indicators.

Nope, it shows a letter K now for the Kemble line and a D for the down line towards Bristol or Swansea or a U for the wrong road. The old one on the previous signal SN44 used to be the stencil type and showed DM or UM and a letter B for the Kemble branch when it was a single line.

Alphabetical displays in theatre route indicators.

If you want to see one of the X indications, there is one at Swindon when a train leaves plat 1 to go towards Kemble via wrong road, otherwise a K is shown.
