Differences in rolling stock safety regulations in mainland Europe compared to UK

Spent a week travelling around Romania, all I can say is take care around the doors, trains depart with them open, some close (due to TB0) but others don't. One instance on an iR from Galtai towards Bucharest a door flew open at 120kmh and train crew were trying to shut it, eventually it was...

(Nearly) unlimited rail travel in France this summer for €49/month, but not for everyone

The real problem of course is that off the main TGV corridors SNCF don't offer enough trains to be able to cope with the demand as is. Region Grande Est is even introducing mandetory reservations on TER! In Germany we have a general hourly frequency on most regional lines, in France you get a...

    More Interrail validity silliness (Trenord)

It's always a shame to hear of staff arguing around like this, especially as deescalation techniques taught at least to us conductors in Germany strongly advise against doing do . I would complain directly to Trenord. (and apologies for my blunt wording on the previous version of this post)

    Trenord Lugano-Milan Despatch Procedure

the riding in the cab sounds normal by itallian standards. But the dispatch sounds rather odd given that the Flirts heading to Lugano would have light barriers (and therefore would allow DOO). The most we would do in Germany is key the local door open but the rest is down to the driver.

London to Munich by train - Eurostar connection/what to do if delayed.

I would work out if an Interrail Pass is more cost effective, it certainly is for me when heading towards the UK and I want to do an additional trip on the NR network.

    German Rail in decline ?

The EC's don't tend to run during strike. BRB run hourly regional trains to Kufstein and from then onwards there are frequent services to Innsbruck

Bizarre interaction on ZSSK train - Interrail refused

Odd to hear this about ZSSK staff, usually a very friendly bunch. Once had an odd one between Marchegg and Bratislava who claimed I needed a reservation to use the REX, it is not even possible to reserve on those services. He wanted 30 euros but I argued back in German and he soon buggered off...

    ÖBB buys Go-Ahead Germany

The Go Ahead brand will only be able to stay temporarily. A new brand will be worked on once the sale is complete. It remains to be seen how closely OBB will get involved with the new subsidiary but knowing them they like to put their own mark on things. The mood amongst staff has improved a lot...

    German Rail in decline ?

Main issues having worked as a conductor on the Go Ahead Allgäu network (Munich-Buchloe-Memmingen-Lindau) since December 2021: Single track line with passing loops at stations, too many trains and not enough slack in the timetable (Germany seems to prefer advertising how fast trains might get...

DOO in Europe - how widespread is it and what have the unions' reactions been?

From my experience it depends on the type of train. At my op (Go Ahead Bayern) the driver is responsible for operating the doors, but the contracts specify the onboard supervisors do a 'service view' out of the passenger doors. DB Regio is the same but Transdev BRB and Alex still give safety...

On the German rail forums you can find the diagrams of n wagenn coaches hauled by locos. https://www.drehscheibe-online.de/foren/read.php?006,9180123

    Stuttgart area loco hauled services.

The German rail forum (Drehscheibe) lists all of the loco hauled and n wagen regional train diagrams: https://www.drehscheibe-online.de/foren/read.php?006,9180123 Stuttgart-Nürnberg is well worth doing Bewgt also have their programme of tourist trains for the summer...

Small and medium sized towns outside of the UK with railway stations on different lines?

Not a terminus but Plauen in Saxony festures an upper and a lower station completly seperated. Halle is interesting as it features an S Bahn line constructed in east german times to a terminus in Halle-Nietleben. Swinoujscie in Poland features two stations seperated by the Swina channel.

    Sad border stations

Not really a sad station in terms of service level but the rolling stock hasn't generally been updated in decades and the station left as it is: Simbach/Inn is well worth a visit as it has been preserved rather than a huge modernization program which took place on the other side of the Inn in...

Examples of crew “looking down” on other crew

I'll add the German perspective, at Go Ahead drivers and Guards work together quite well, there are always going to be one or two drivers who think they are superior to the people working the rear end of the train but it's rare. Between operators, when we started operating in Bavaria DB Staff...

Covid restrictions abroad: updates & observations

Austria is likley to reintroduce FFP2 masks on public transport, stations and supermarkets in the coming days/weeks judging by the media pushing and politicians from FPO and Greens saying it's likley following todays presidential election.

How are carriages allocated on cross-boundary international trains

I know that DB staff do regular checks on trains they take over at a border point. Recently Czech coaching stock has been cancelled from Decin onwards as there were faults that did not meet german standards so reliability on the Berlin-Prague corridor has tanked big time recently. Czech Railways...

Covid restrictions abroad: updates & observations

You would need a doctors letter to be exempt. Otherwise (as is unfortunetly the case in my role on the railways in germany) you will be told to leave. It gets even more insane when shops require it as they do not have to allow a maskless person entry even with a doctors attest. On another note...

Covid restrictions abroad: updates & observations

Germany has today decided to extend Surgical/FFP2 mask wearing on public transport until at least the 7th April 2023, and other measures such as testing/vaccination (the latter has a three-month limit) can be introduced to access certain indoor areas mask-free from the 1st of October. Federal...

Covid restrictions abroad: updates & observations

It's safe to say that Germany does not consider the pandemic over and that restrictions will increase as Winter approaches. Measures in discussion include more mandetory mask wearing, compulsory testing to gain access to venues regardless of vaccination status. Unfortunetly the German state has...
