    GWML Electrification

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this before but today I noticed masts to the west of Reading on the former goods lines. I believe them to be the very first ones placed as part of the new scheme. perhaps this thread could be used to update the progress of them spreading.

    Paddington signalling arrangements

was it possible the call on aspect was lit? These can be hard to spot from some angles. If the train had been instructed to pass the signal at danger he would have been stopped prior to the movement, and all signals in the area have TPWS so the brakes would have slammed on if it was a genuine SPAD.

    Junction indicators

Two examples spring to mind. Fairwood Jn outside Westbury will give a no.1 route for the station even though it's mostly straight on ( trackwork was slued here I think because the avoider came later) Penwithers Jn, Truro. Trains for Falmouth get the No.1 even though it's straight on again. I...

    Point motor force?

The Deadly Assassin - One of the best episodes they ever did. 'You're finished Doctor!!!' The train just dissapears and he's no longer trapped, as it's all in his mind. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YCCu5dEZ-0&feature=related

Class 67 @ Whatley Quarry branch.

Hmm. just left the branch light engine so no idea what that was all about.

Class 67 @ Whatley Quarry branch.

I've just seen a CL67 heading light engine onto the Whatley Quarry branch which is most unusual. I assume it's been subbbed in place of the usual 59 to haul a stone train. I thought this might be of interest to anyone who wanted to see this.

Total signal failure Crewe last Monday

Where did you hear this from? I don't think this is safe, and wouldn't be practical. I'm surprised this didn't happen a long time ago. Remove the incentive and the theft will cease. If scrap metal merchants complain about the impact to their businesses then it's probably worth pointing out...

    Famous people on trains

Tony Blair at Kings Cross 2 days after he stood down as PM. With a few bodyguards. Took him about 20 seconds from the train stopping to him being out of the station.

    Sheffield Station north throat

Only obvious thing to do would be to make both Lines Bi-Directional and try to ensure all trains for the nunnery curve use the eastern side of the station. coming. Reopening the Woodhead would be hard but not impossible - or Matlock - Buxton which would divert all the Liverpool - Norwich's...

Fatality at Chalfont & Latimer - A warning

I saw a few years ago a journalist direct lift a quote from one of the other boards regarding a rail fatality, also quoted as a rail worker. I wonder if this was the same guy. Shoddy piece of journalism. This is the very reason why I never speculate on what went on and ask others not to do so...

    Glastonbury

For those who are interested at 17:30 ish I saw a 67 with BR blue MK2s heading through Frome on what I can only assume is a Glastonbury special. Large fleet of buses in the station car park, so I don't know if the train is terminating short of Castle Cary. I didn't get the number as it took...

Railway noise levels for fast trains in HS1 and TGV routes

Hope this doesn't sound like i'm teaching you to suck eggs but... thinking back to my days studying acoustics it can be influenced by a great many factors, Wind, air pressure, the topology of the land and surrounding buildings, and conflict sources of other noise. In short, one must be careful...

    york through tracks

I don't really see the point of reinstating the through roads at York. I think the cost vs benefit isn't there. Due to the way that resignalling and electrification was carried out in 1989/90, the current track layout at both ends would have to be significantly altered to accommodate the...

Were we lied to about Privitisation?

I think the only proper and definative way to answer this is to examine the political manifestos and speech transcripts and then compare them to subsequent events then discount what could not be delivered due to circumstance. No doubt they can be downloaded from somewhere. I don't have time to...

    Wcml shut?

This is really sad. Can I respectfully request that we don't speculate or pass judgement or hearsay for the time being. The RAIB will probably be all over this so we will find out in due course.

    Great heck (selby) train crash

I really hope that the BBC have quoted Mr Hart out of context or doctored his quote as journalists love to do - but if he really meant it then I have no sympathy for him. As has already been established the bridge conformed to the regulations that where in place when it was built. I don't...

    Train driver mental health

An emotive subject for me - I've never seen a rail death but have witnessed three fatal road accidents, the first two in particular where pretty bad. It will never leave me completely. I can only speculate on what it is like for others and especially those who drive trains or other forms of...
