I was wondering why it is that on the ECML that the line going Northwards up towards Scotland is called Down line and the line going Southwards down towards London is called Up line.

With 321 901 and 321 902 transferred to Clacton. I thought it were best to drag the conversation away from the Northern 321/322 withdrawal thread over to this one.

There is a lot of rumours around that Southern could lose the Class 171s at the end of the franchise. What are the chances of this happening and would they go to EMR should they leave.

Could Class 769s be used on the Southern (or what ever the next franchise will be called) IF they decide to replace the current 171s.
