Creating Great British Railways - IET webinar presented by Rufus Boyd, GBRTT

I've just watched a livestreamed presentation from the IET which covers some historic background, current thinking and priorities around the creation of Great British Railways, presented by Rufus Boyd, Programme Director Passenger and Freight Services, GBR Transition Team. Some of the points...

    Leaving London Travelcard Area/Zone 6

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I did think that might be too good to be true

    Leaving London Travelcard Area/Zone 6

I understood the OP to mean that he was starting from Reading, travelling to Paddington, Abbey Wood, Liverpool St, Shenfield then returning to Liverpool St, Paddington and Reading - which funnily enough is what I'm planning to do, albeit that I'll be starting from Pangbourne.. My conclusion was...

Nailsea and Backwell station: buildings demolished in error?

It was quite a sight to see an HST stopping at such a small station. I remember being amazed at the contrast between the then brand new HSTs and the rather basic class 101 DMUs which sounded distinctly bus-like.

Nailsea and Backwell station: buildings demolished in error?

Small world! 1647782842 I suspect you're right. The 'foundations', which can still be seen, are a series of brick pillars reaching all the way down to the road level, so the buildings must have been somewhat precariously poised. Given the economic climate of the early 70s, they probably took...

E-ticket "battery" issue - is names on tickets an option for a fix?

Looking at NRCoT and Bylaws 17 and 18, I notice that although it is clear that the passenger must hand over their ticket for inspection when requested, there is no requirement for this to happen immediately. It might be argued that a passenger who says something to the effect of "I will...

Nailsea and Backwell station: buildings demolished in error?

During my school days, my local station was Nailsea and Backwell, situated 12 miles west of Temple Meads on the Bristol to Exeter line. By the time I first visited in the early 1970s, it was already a shadow of its former self, having lost its sidings, signal box and platform buildings. I...

Confusing an out of court settlement for criminal matters with some sort of civil litigation?

Thank you - I had read an article referring to a judicial review of a private prosecution where the applicants were described as having argued "inter alia that the (private prosecutor) did not have locus standi to bring the prosecution" but having read further, the issue of "standing" seems to...

Confusing an out of court settlement for criminal matters with some sort of civil litigation?

This delightfully meandering thread prompted me to go and find out a little more about private prosecutions. Standard disclaimer that I am not a lawyer, but I suspect that the hypothetical example of random person Y attempting to bring a private prosecution against fare evader X would fail, as...

GWR battery train procurement suggestions & predictions

I've just watched a recording of an IET webinar presented on 14 June 2021 by Richard Baker, a consultant engineer with Vivarail, about their fast charging system. The focus was mainly on the safety and control aspects of the charging system (which was fascinating in itself) but during the Q & A...

Trivia: Stations with platforms that have never been used

Ah yes, until I looked at the old OS maps more closely, I hadn't appreciated that the line to Hertford East ran past, rather than through Hertford North. Thank you for the clarification. It's a bit odd that the disused platform was built and never used. I wonder what the original intention might...

Trivia: Stations with platforms that have never been used

I think this may have been used for the old line from Welwyn to Hertford North. There was also a short link from Hertford North to just outside Hertford East.

I had my ticket checked on a mid-morning train between Reading and Paddington last week.

A bit of a stretch but any idea where in the Reading area this might have been?

Thanks! It's been a thoroughly enjoyable exercise in satisfying an idle curiousity and I'm very appreciative of all the responses and contributions

A bit of a stretch but any idea where in the Reading area this might have been?

Ladies and gentlemen, I think we have a winner - and it isn't Odd Lane. With a little time on my hands, I decided to go exploring, firstly to the top of the track leading to Odd Lane crossing. Although the route looks promising initially as the restricted byway leaves Clappers Farm Road...
