Is the assessment day really that difficult!

I don't think the assessments are difficult at all, I really enjoyed some of them like the cable and dials and fault finding were tests I enjoyed. People mess up on the day cos of what's on offer, a job that pays alot of money. If people did these tests in the comfort of their living room for...

Is the juice worth the squeeze?

Don't know if this post is genuine or a wind up, surely a person would know before applying about the shift work involved. Don't know many people that go through all them assessments and then say no.

    Work,life,financial balance.

Since start of 2021 I've just been working my basic 4 days a week and I do permanent afternoons, I feel I'm at home alot and get to spend plenty of time with kids and family, long weekends I usually catch up with friends. Maybe the guys who work every rest day and Sunday they can and stop over...

The Driver role - your thoughts and feelings..

I love the job mainly because I enjoy having absolutely nothing to do with passengers, I was a guard first and did not enjoy dealing with the general public. There is always time for banter with drivers/guards when on pnb or the rare time you are spare and not given any work.

    Apprenticeship Trainee Drivers

Well it would be unfair on the driver who does not have the NVQ as he passed out way before the apprenticeship scheme started so doubt that will ever happen. Anyways doubt a driver manager would care about the Mickey mouse qualification, a driver that recently passed out told the driver manager...

    Apprenticeship Trainee Drivers

I agree the functional skills is a waste of time and u will gain nothing from doing it, it's basically 1 week in a class room, however if u can show u have GCSE grade C or better u will just do front ending, then it's just 1 phone call from your assessor every 5 or 6 weeks seeing how u are...

Dealing with awkward passengers when working as a TM/conductor

Walk away to the back cab is the best thing to do.

    Second Job While Waiting (WMT)

Well It was WMT that allowed a trainee I'm friends with to take on a 2nd job as he said he was bored being at home for so long and effecting his mental health. All they said was to stay on top of the rules and traction as anytime you could get a call to return to work, this was 7 months ago.

    Second Job While Waiting (WMT)

Try doing it for 18 months and see how boring it can get, I know a feel trainees who are still sat at home since March 2020 and haven't heard a thing from WMT for months, sitting at home doing nothing sounds great but in reality it can get boring especially during these covid times.

    Second Job While Waiting (WMT)

A very long wait if you are for Birmingham New Street, most likely be sat at home for up to 18 months before they find a instructor, could be 2 years.

WMT - Any risk of Redundancies

Depends what depot, if you're down for Birmingham New Street then it's going to be a long long wait as at the moment I've only seen 1 trainee out and about and I've been told there are around 40 sat at home for Birmingham New Street!

    Tips for earlies

Do permanent afternoons, much better. Sleep when you like, wake up when you like, never tired at work, and you can get every Sunday in

    WMT Driver Pool - 2021/22

Yes everyone getting paid and I have no clue why they keep recruiting drivers when they have backlog from summer of 2019!

Ex Cops who have go on to be Drivers

I think it will be alot more than 6 months at home before u start driving a train, as trainees from September, October and November 2019 course are still at home. They all need to return and complete 230 hours driving and pass out before trainees from 2020 start driving. And sometimes after...

WMT - Any risk of Redundancies

I don't think they've told WMT incase they say no. More concerned about their own mental health looking at the same 4 walls each day.

WMT - Any risk of Redundancies

I would say that is most likely just new st, I know another course started last week and 5 on there are also for new st. The instructor situation at the moment is crazy as its voluntary. I know some trainees who are sat at home have taken on a cash in hand job because they're so bored.

WMT - Any risk of Redundancies

For new st you will be looking at 18 months I'd say until you start driving with a instructor this is due to the backlog. There are trainee drivers for new st who have been sat home for 13 months now and still no indication when they will be back.

PTS Learning Advice - New Job

Nothing wrong with having a look at the PTS as it's not hard to understand, very basic exam. Wmt email the trainees a pdf file pts and get them to read up before starting so I dont see why you cant have a read. The actual rules and regs it's best to wait until the classroom.

    WMT Driver Pool - 2021/22

After 9 months the pay will increase. But you wont get on the full pay until qualified.

    WMT Driver Pool - 2021/22

Good luck to everyone starting the drivers course soon, trainees for Birmingham new st, u will do the pts, rules 1 and 2, traction course then will be sat at home for 12-18 months due to the ongoing issues with driver instructors and huge backlog of Birmingham trainees currently sat at home. The...
