1S49 Penzance-Edinburgh is booked a single unit to Bristol TM but then a second is added and detached again at Newcastle. Departs Sheffield at 1625 but when I travelled on it last Wednesday , both sets were pretty full.

Aye, on both days they go round-the-bridges at Newcastle so the sets are being turned. There are booked stops at Peterborough and York on both runs. Perhaps crew changes, or some sort of LNER jolly ?
