Surely if the 701s don't soon start entering service they'll need the 458/4s to displace 450s to replace all the missing 458/5s? Understand it's not that simple to get everything in place, but it'll surely start looking like an option?

Agree the PDL numbers haven't recovered as expected, but wasn't another objective of the 458 project to be to replace 450s on the line, for their more long-distance friendly 2+2 seating? Is this not still the case?

Saw this myself lastnight, it was 8504, with 56081 leading, 69008 rear.

^ Seen by myself this morning, 56081 leading with 458424 and 69008 on the rear. . From post #1834 here it required wheelsets to be rebuilt. Not sure on the status of this now.

I see most (maybe all?) the Cardiff-Penzance services today are only going as far west as plymouth and being turned there, I'm guessing this is because crew taking it right to Penzance and back would incur overtime?

This is going to look absolutely ridiculous after the throwing away of all that money on the 442s. Why not enter the 458/4 now and (by cascading 450s?) carry on binning the aged 455s which have no toilets, no aircon, and poor cabs (I'm not a driver so happy to be corrected on that).
